The Top 9 Herbs for Liver Cleansing

A bowl of organic turmeric. To do a liver flush, try to consume organic herbs like turmeric and dandelion roots.Imagine a fish tank with a motorized water filter. If the filter is clogged with toxins from the tank, the entire tank becomes filled with the same contaminants. In our system, the filter is the liver, the tank is the body, and the fish that has to live in it is you. Thankfully, a number of herbs for liver cleansing do exist. But first, let’s examine the role of the liver in detoxification a bit further.

The liver is the primary organ responsible for expelling and breaking down toxins entering the body. In particular, it produces bile, a detoxifying agent metabolically indispensable in breaking down fats from food. Even many traditional medical doctors are fully aware of just how important the health of your liver plays in the outcome of your overall health.

Dr. Karl Maret, M.D. :

“The proper functioning of the eyes, the heart, the brain, the gonads, the joints, and the kidneys, are all dependent on good liver activity…If the liver is impaired from constructing even one of the thousands of enzyme systems the body requires, there is an impairment in overall body function and a resultant greater metabolic stress on the individual.”

There are many herbs that can help with liver cleansing. Here are the top 9 herbs I use and recommend:

Borotutu Bark

Borotutu bark is by far one of the most powerful substances when it comes to liver cleansing and digestive system support. It has even shown promise in combating biliary colic, and jaundice. It’s also important to note that this herb contains powerful antioxidants which are known to help protect your liver cells from serious damage.

Milk Thistle Seed

Milk thistle has been used for over two thousand years due to its remarkable effects on the liver and gallbladder. Galen and Pliny, the ancient philosophers recognized and used the power of milk thistle for liver cleansing and support. Milk thistle helps with the detoxification of poisons such as alcohol, regeneration of damaged liver tissue, stimulation of bile production, and improved digestion.

Chanca Piedra

The indigenous people of the amazon have used chanca piedra for centuries to promote the body’s natural elimination of liver, gallbladder and kidney stones. It also stimulates the liver to purge itself of harmful toxins and foreign particles. Chanca piedra soothes the liver, increases bile production, and reduces the formation of calcified stones in the body.

Greater Celandine

The ancient Greeks and Romans considered celandine to be one of the most powerful liver cleansing herbs. Maurice Mességué the famous french herbalist used greater celandine for all liver problems. Celandine stimulates enzyme production from the pancreas, helps the liver eliminate foreign particles, stimulates the production of bile, helps relieve gallbladder spasms and improves a sluggish liver.

Chicory Root

Known for its vibrant blue flowers, chicory is also a medicinal herb celebrated for its ability to help cleanse the liver. Ancient Roman, Persian, Arabian, and Indian physicians used chicory leaves and root to aid against a slew of liver ailments including jaundice, gallbladder and liver stones, urinary stones, constipation, indigestion, depression, and headaches.

Dandelion Root

This humble weed, often hacked to bits by lawn care workers, is a liver cleanser that has been celebrated throughout the ages. Dandelion root stimulates bile flow from the liver, and is often used by herbalists to help fight fatty liver, cirrhosis, estrogen dominance, and even acne.

Organic Turmeric

This yellow root, a cousin of ginger, is a powerful liver protector and even liver cell regenerator. It not only helps stimulate enzymes responsible for flushing out toxins (including known carcinogens) from the body, but UCLA research found that turmeric is capable of combating the effects of carcinogens.

Peppermint isn’t just for fresh breath. This herb stimulates bile flow and relaxes bile ducts, helping to break down fats. It also helps reduce bad cholesterol, which makes the liver’s job of filtering toxins easier. Peppermint also inhibits blockages in the kidney and gallbladder and calms the stomach for optimal digestion.

Organic Yellow Dock Root

This herb is known as a blood purifier and commonly used to cleanse toxins from the body. Yellow dock helps break down fatty foods by stimulating bile production, enhancing normal liver detoxification, improving the flow of digestive juices, helping the liver eliminate toxins, and has mild diuretic effects to help flush out harmful substances. It also helps reduce irritation of the liver and digestive system.

I started from zero, I came to Canada with nothing, work in many restaurants ,wash dishes , made pizza for living, and kept on going.
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life, so I kept myself in positive mode, when I fall I wake up again and keep going,
I cried alone and was home sick when I arrived to Canada back in 1980.
But I kept my home and my family in my heart to give me power to struggle, survive and move on.

Attitude to me is more important than facts…. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.
We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have in life , and that is our attitude.

I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes our love ,life, future and not what we do as workers, or what we have ,how much we have. All of us have lots and purpose in life and all of us do our parts to survive, provide, help to improve ,pay tax and get along in this society no matter who we are and how smart or less educated we are, we all deserve love and respect as human been.
All of us are wonderful human been, hard working ,smart in our own way, and we all will meet in the cross road to help each other , learn from each other and keep this life going.
So trust in yourself , your ability , don’t be rude but work on your attitude, we all in this together, we all are children of God.

Well said , I completely agree with you 🙂

  • Pat Lewis Morris

    Good morning,
I recently set about trying to cleanse my liver as I used to love crisp and tasty meat fat. I eat an organic diet, grow my own greens and generally am in good health. However during this detox, of which I added green tea, turmeric tea and milk thistle my cholesterol has shot up 2 points – but I will not take statins or drugs. My blood pressure is good, I do not eat sugar or processed foods and I am not over weight. I am 74. Could this be a temporary rise because I didn’t drink sufficient water to flush out any toxins. I think it is familial because I lost over one and a half stone over a year and it did not affect my cholesterol at all.

  • Could be… but that’s really hard to say!

  • Mel B

2 points is not a lot at all- this could be natural variation in the test. I would not worry about this.

  • Pat Lewis Morris

Thank you Mel B but It’s not so much the two points – it’s now 9.1 but as my blood pressure is normal, I am not over weight and I eat little sugar I am said to be in the lower middle risk. However I am concerned about statins which appears to be given out as HRT was when I was younger. Millions of people are on statins, with one alleged side effect being memory loss. With so many younger people getting senile dementia two friends of mine in their early sixties I cant help wondering if there is a connection?

  • Pat Lewis Morris

I have just read your comment I make turmeric tea. Boil 10 cups of water. Add two teaspoons of turmeric, bring back to simmer gently for ten minutes. Strain mixture through muslin. Sediment will collect in the bottom anyway but don’t stir this up. I put half a teaspoon of honey in a small drop of boiling water in a large cup and carefully pour cold turmeric tea, again through a muslin. (I use the bags you get when you buy a box of peas to soak). It is not unpleasant to taste but supposed to be a good natural cleansing tea for the liver.

PLEASE help/reply ONLY if you are CERTAIN you have sound information not likely to bring further HARM to my loved one. I have a young woman, age 50, just diagnosed with stage 4 Liver cancer & given only a couple of months to live. The cancer is fast spreading & already spread to gallbladder (& possibly other organs) … I’m not sure of the exact NAME of the type of cancer, as I am far away from my relatives who are informing me & can’t spell or pronounce the “long” name of the cancer. MY QUESTION IS THIS: what can she do to bring down her liver count? She can’t have the chemo to help give her a little more time because of the high liver count. They are poor folks on Medicaid, and the docs don’t offer any alternative ideas or advice…just that they think about calling hospice, keep giving her morpheine, and make final plans right away! She desperately wants to try to hang on for as long as she can…she has a son, a sister, parents and a very close uncle & aunts who are all devastated (and ME!). I looked up some liver-friendly foods, etc….but I’m reaching out here to ANYONE who can contribute GOOD info on bringing her liver count down! Thank YOU!!

  • Clau

Dear deb, one year and half ago there was a lady who has cancer spread all over the doctor didn’t want to give anything only one more month to live, so her daughter in law gave to her a tea which she started to drink, and started to improve, she starter acupunture and with a nathuropathic doctor but she was in a big depression, so family support and food change is a big factor, first she have to stop eating sugar, milk, pepper and wheat . It is very important that your body started to stop swelling inside. Everything is better is green a raw vegetable so your liver doesn’t work so hard.

If you want information about the tea, please give and email so I sent you the information,

I wanted to say taking turmeric every day around a tsp a day or half that has reduced my cholestertol with any medications from the doctor .. I stopped taking them myself to see what would happen in the next few months as I knew I would be seeing him soon.. At my checkup in Jan 2015 these are my results… My cholesterol was 255 in May 2014 and now it is LDL 150!!!!!! Dropped 105 points since May without any meds from the doctor… My A!C in May was 10.5 and now results are dropped to 8 2 whole points in 8 months and I do take my insulin and pills daily but have been using the DE also since July. My sugar count for the 6 months has been running at 8 not 10.5 and I have never dropped 2 whole points in 8 or 6 months time…. I have no thyroid and it has been hard to get my synthyroid right in may he upedt he dosage and now it is too high by the lab test so he reduced it back to what it was in May ???? and it was running high then ??? So needless to say TUMERIC is wonderful pills and it detoxes and regenerates the liver and the Diatimacous Earth is great also and works for me in food structure form… Sorry so long but I have to tell you that you can make your foods your medicine and change your health by trying Gods foods and watch your body change . I also have lost 10 poiunds or more in 8 months and keep bouncing between 15-20 and back… But I am trying th wheat belly diet and lost 6 pounds the first week and felt better without the wheat in my system physically moving and things…. Try and find your foods that are such great medicines in your body. I hope to back up the diabetes and live without taking insulin daily to stay alive….

  • Celia Martinez

Celia Martinez– August 5th, 2015 –Hi Dr Group; I suffer from RA and have been taking Methrotexate for about 12 years. I have a mild case of RA and take 12,5 mg of Methrotexate once a week. This medicine has damaged my liver. I feel very well and healthy and all my blood tests have always excellent results. However I did an ultrasound of my abdomen and it indicates that my liver is big and could have some damage. According to the liver doctor I visited this damage or “apparent” damage as he called it could have been caused by the Methrotexate. What can I do to solve this? I would totally like to follow a 100% natural protocol to be healed from Rheumatoid Arthritis naturally. I’m very worried because I haven’t been able to find here in South America a doctor who knows about nutrition and natural treatments. They all prescribe tons of drugs which I refuse to take. On the other hand I do suffer from a sickness (RA) so I feel stuck between a hard stone and a wall. What do you recommend? What’s your protocol for RA? BTW I did the liver/GB cleanse and it was amazing.
    Thanks a lot. Sincerely, Celia

  • Celia, in regards to taking alternatives besides the Methrotexate, we recommend taking Intracal which may help with bone inflamation and irritation. You may also take Veganzyme which can be taken systemically to treat as well. Serapeptaise is also a good source to help with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Below i will include a link with more information on how enzymes can help with Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as Serapeptaise.

Is a Liver cleanse safe for someone with liver cancer? My wife recently had radioembolization and we’re currently looking into alternative medicines. Theoretically thinking, a cleanse would be a good place to start but I figured I’d ask.

  • GHC Support

Thank you for contacting us. Although we anticipate that a liver cleanse may be helpful in rejuvenating your wife’s liver/gallbladder, and facilitating the removal of toxic
build-up, it is suggested in these delicate cases to consult a reputable doctor or naturopath for additional advice. Additionally, she may simply consider using Livatrex on a maintenance basis to experience a gentle detox. Here you
