The Gallbladder and Gallstones

[1] While it’s possible to have gallstones and not know it, severe cases can lead to rupturing of the gallbladder and even death. Understanding your gallbladder and naturally supporting it with the right nutrition is imperative for good health.

Gallbladder: Location, Description, and Function

Located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen and situated beneath the liver, the gallbladder is a kidney bean-shaped organ connected to the liver by the hepatic duct. The gallbladder works as a storage facility for the pint or so of bile the liver produces every day. The cells of the intestinal walls secrete a hormone called cholecystokinin which causes the gallbladder to contract and send bile into the common bile duct.

What is the Purpose of Digestive Bile?

The gallbladder stores bile until it’s needed, generally after you consume fatty foods. Bile provides a lot of help to the enzyme lipase by breaking down fat into smaller particles and increasing the surface area of the lipids for the lipase to act upon. Bile also breaks down the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K while promoting the assimilation of fatty acids.

After the bile breaks down the fats, toxins, and dead blood cells, the mixture continues to move through the digestive system. Bile actually encourages this peristaltic action that eventually leads to a bowel movement. In this regard, bile production helps prevent constipation and supports the natural elimination of toxins. Some research suggests bile possesses antimicrobial benefits as well. [2]

Another note about bile… although many people believe bowel movement color is caused by the food they eat, processed hemoglobin from the aforementioned blood cells gives bile its yellow-green hue which mixes with food to create the distinctive color of human waste.[3]

How Do Gallstones Develop?

Gallstones form when too much cholesterol is stored in the gallbladder. This means that poor diet is a main contributor to gallstones. [4] However, it can be argued that both heredity also plays role in the formation of gallstones as scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany discovered a gene that significantly affects gallstone production. [5]

The Composition of Gallstones

Bile consists primarily of dissolved cholesterol, but an excess of cholesterol can lead to small, hard stones forming within the gallbladder. [6] Stones can also be formed by excessive bilirubin or calcium salt buildup in the gallbladder, but these are commonly referred to as pigment stones. Women (especially if pregnant or elderly), Native Americans, and anyone that is overweight have a higher risk of developing gallstones.

General Statistics About Gallstones

  1. Each year in the United States, approximately 1 million people are diagnosed with gallstones.
  2. Over 500,000 gallbladder removals or related operations occur in the United States each year, making it one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. The majority of gallbladder removals are related to the onset of stones. [7]
  3. Some 42 million Americans suffer from gallstones; many are unaware they have the condition. [8]

Symptoms Of Gallstones

It’s common to live with stones without apparent symptoms. However, when a gallstone attack does surface, the crippling pain can last from a few minutes to a few hours or more. The pain usually starts in the abdomen and radiates to the chest, the back, and between the shoulder blades and may be accompanied by gas, heartburn, and indigestion.

If gallstones block the bile duct, the risk of infection increases. If the pain is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills, then an infection has already started. At that point, if it spreads to the liver, jaundiced skin and yellowing of the eyes are close behind.

Gallstones may also block the cystic duct and inflame the gallbladder. When this, a condition known as cholecystitis, happens, pain in the upper right abdomen and left shoulder occurs and brings on a fever. Another problem, gallstone ileus, is caused by a gallstone slipping into the small intestine and blocking entry to the large intestine. Although gallstone ileus can be corrected only by surgery, nutritional support can promote liver health.

What Herbs Aid in Removing Gallstones?

Organic Chicory Root

Organic chicory root (Cichorium intybus) has a long and well-documented history of supporting liver health. In fact, the ancient Romans used this herb to help cleanse the blood. One theory is that bile stored in the bile duct will continually “drip” into the small intestine (even when there is no food present) and cause the intestinal tract to become inflamed. The long-term effect of this irritation is that it may contribute to the onset of colon cancer.

What Diet Is Best For The Gallbladder?

Since cholesterol is one of the main contributors to the development of gallstones, it makes sense to stick with a low fat, low-cholesterol diet. A diet high in fiber can help keep the gallbladder and the rest of your digestive system functioning properly. Foods best avoided include coffee, soda, milk, chocolate, meats, dairy products, and especially those high in sugar.

Can Food Allergies Affect My Gallbladder?

It’s possible. J.C. Breneman, M.D., a pioneer in food allergy research, discovered that eliminating allergy-prone foods from the diet can cause gallbladder symptoms to diminish. The allergic reaction to the foods of his patients was found to cause inflammation of the biliary ducts, which in turn restricted the flow of bile and led to increased pain.

  • The popularity of gall bladder removal procedures horrifies me. I can’t get over how casual surgeons are about removing bodily organs which contribute to a patient’s quality of life. The casual way they yank out women’s reproductive organs is unconscionable, and so is the removal of patient’s gall bladders. Think of the long term consequences of losing the ability to digest fats and metabolize fat soluble vitamins. I have no doubt that this leads to decreased quality and length of life.
    Why are so many medical doctors intent on killing us? When they’re not prescribing hazardous drugs and suggesting poor dietary practices they’re hacking out our vital organs. American medicine needs to heal itself. This is crazy.

    Hi You mention various herbs to help the function. Can these be used as a cleansing? Do you take them together? Daily? Etc. please can you advise as I was in so much pain yesterday but I would rather go the natural route. I’ve been a vegan for nearly 3yrs and over the past year have learnt about good fats, bad fats, sugars and salts etc as well as many other harmful ingredients so I do my best to eat healthy raw organic food but maybe I’m not eating enough fibre? How can I incorporate the herbs into my diet please? I got gallstones before I became vegan.

    There are different cleansing products that use these herbs as part of the program. Some people also take concentrated extracts and these herbs as supplements. If you can get your hands on fresh herbs, you can do tea and other preparations.

    doc told me yesterday, after a hospital visit for the horrible pain, that i have a gall stone about 2 millimeters and i need to just have the gallbladder removed. I don’t like the idea of just removing parts if there is something else i can do. Please help! What can i do, if anything, to break this up and get it to pass? doc said that he looked through my past visits and that it has been there for the last 3 years at least. Why have i never been told this before? Is there anything i can do or is this to far gone do do anything else but surgery?

    Well, since you asked … (Have you experienced gallstones?)

    I decided to juice fast for a few days. I decided to do a liver/gall bladder cleanse the day before (that would be last Sunday, a couple of days ago). I did not think I had any gallstones and was just doing it as part of the cleanse. I used the simplest recipe around: 8 ounces of fresh squeezed orange juice mixed with 8 ounces of olive oil. The next day, I passed 5 to 8 stones. Bright pea green, and approximately the same size as large peas. They crumbled when squeezed.

    Now, if I’d been having pain or something, I don’t know if I would have tried that, but I might have.

    Endoscopic removal of stones, ERCP is an alternative to gallbladder removal. It is a fascinating procedure where a tube is put down the throat of an anesthetized patient to the gallbladder where the stone is either crushed with a basket like wire tool or removed with it by enlarging the small sphincter muscle that is the opening for the bile. There are several informative videos on YouTube showing the procedure. It is not without complications but it is an alternative that does work when done by skilled practitioners.

    I have a friend with gallstones- she took tablets to dissolve the stones instead of having the gallbladder removed. It can take months but it’s worth it to avoid surgery. I now have the same problem- i have to have a scan to see what kind of stones they are because one type can be cured with tablets while the other needs surgery. The doctor mentioned cholesterol stones and another kind I can’t remember. Maybe things are different here in Europe but it’s worth asking about the tablets. Hope this helps.

    Hi,I’ve just been diagnosed with IBS and went to the Er bc of pain in my abdominal,bloated,breaking out in heavy sweats.The doctor said my gallbladder has sludge in it about to turn into gallstones.He put me on gallbladder diet and an antibiotic.I’m worried BC my mom 57,just past away march 22nd this year,with gallbladder cancer,she was having the same symptoms,but she was really yellow.any advice on how to beat this,BC I have a lot of mucus,I still feel bloated,I have to take linzess to get the fluids off my stomach,its sooo tiring.

    I want to try this, but I’m not supposed to have Orange juice or any acids because I’m getting over a Gallbladder attack.

    Well I don’t know, I live in Italy and over here a doctor has to prescribe them – they aren’t “over the counter” drugs. Also you need to have a test done to see what kind of stones you have: one kind has to be surgically removed and the other can be dissolved with the said tablets. It also depends on how big they are, your age, if there is any danger of them blocking the duct etc. If I remember rightly (but don’t quote me on this!) I think the cholesterol-based stones have to be surgically removed and the other kind (not sure which) can be treated with tablets. Sorry not to be more helpful! 🙁

    Hi ive been having a gallstone attack too and my ultrasound reflects that my gallbladder is almost full with stone.. I have been drinking apple cider vinegar and chanca piedra tea..

    I suffered with stomach problems for 20+ years with IBS ,acid reflux and high blood pressure.

    Last year in June my blood pressure went crazy and the doctors had a hard time getting under control.
    In July, my Gall Bladder went septic and I had to have surgery to remove it.
    The poison it leeched into my body shut down my kidneys and I had to have dialysis for a month until my kidneys recovered (now at 50% of normal)

    Since then my blood pressure has returned to normal and my medication is now at the lowest dose.

    I no longer have stomach problems, acid reflux or IBS.
    I am on the kidney diet for proper nutrition.

    What I can’t explain is why all my symptoms went away after I had my Gall bladder removed?

    I think there must be a correlation between a properly functioning Gall bladder and all the symptoms listed above.

    The doctors must be able to check for a properly functioning Gall Bladder – if you are suffering the way I did – go see your doctor.
