How Do Soap Nuts Work?

Soap Nuts

Soap Nuts are rich in saponin, a natural surfactant that creates a mild sudsy foam when agitated in water. Just like regular store-bought detergents, this foam decreases the surface tension of water inside your washing machine and allows it to better seep down in between the threads where dirt and grime gets trapped.

They're safe to use with all fabrics, and are great for delicate materials like silk, linen and wool. Their mild cleansing action won't fade dark or brightly colored fabrics, nor will they stain your whites.

How Do I Use Maggie's Soap Nuts?

Using Soap Nuts is easy-Just toss a few of them into the included cotton pouch and drop them in your washing machine. For a normal-sized load of whites and brighter colors, use two Soap Nuts and warm or hot water. For darker fabrics, use three or four soap nuts and cold water. And for especially dirty fabrics, you can pre-soak the soap nuts in warm water to help release extra saponin.

Soap Nuts also act as a great all-natural fabric softener, and their low sudsing properties make them ideal for front-loading and high-efficiency washing machines designed to use less water and shorter rinse cycles. Who says you can't save money on your utility bills while helping to save the planet?

How Many Times Can I Reuse Soap Nuts?

When used in cold water, a single batch of Soap Nuts can be used to wash up to four loads of laundry. Soap Nuts release their saponin more quickly in warmer water, so it's not uncommon for them to be spent after one or two loads of whites.

Rub the skin of your Soap Nuts after each load of laundry. If a sudsy foam still develops, then they're good for another wash. If not, then they've used up all their saponin and should be thrown away, or better yet, composted with your other household plant waste.

Each 4.7 ounce package of Maggie's Pure Land Soap Nuts contains enough cleansing power to wash 16 to 20 loads of laundry, and includes a free cotton pouch.
