SLEEP BETTER!

Trying to improve your health? Getting enough sleep may be one of the most pleasant things to put on your "to do" list.

Quantity and Quality: Getting enough sleep is as important as getting the right kind. Not everyone needs the same amount of sleep. What’s enough? If you wake up without an alarm or a nudge, feeling refreshed, you’ve gotten enough. Can’t be done, you say?

The 5 stages: There are 5 stages, or phases, of sleep. Stages 1 - 4 are referred to as non-rapid eye movement (NREM), with light sleep characterizing stages 1 and 2, and deep sleep occurring in stages 3 and 4. In stage 4 growth hormone is released, and cell and tissue repair take place. Stage 5 is called REM sleep, and is the stage most associated with dreaming.

Feeling deprived? Not getting a full night’s sleep may make us cranky and function below normal, but our bodies are usually able to "make up" the lost sleep during the following night without suffering any long-term consequences. Chronic sleep deprivation, on the other hand, can impair the immune system and affect our ability to make appropriate decisions. This can be deadly behind the driver’s wheel.

When sleep is "out of order"

There are several kinds of disruptive sleep patterns, known as sleep disorders. They include:

- Insomnia, or trouble falling asleep or staying asleep

- Sleep apnea, periodic pauses in breathing during sleep

- Restless leg syndrome, characterized by frequent, jerky leg movements during sleep

- Narcolepsy, a sudden inability to stay awake during waking hours, even when focused on a task such as driving.

Symptoms of sleep disorders include:

- Waking during the night

- Loud snoring

- Headache upon awakening

- Daytime fatigue

- Difficulty concentrating on daytime tasks

If you suspect you suffer from a sleep disorder, see your physician. It may be appropriate to undergo a "sleep study test", when your sleep is monitored in a sleep laboratory. Certain physical conditions, such as fibromyalgia, appear to be connected to disruptions of the normal sleep cycle, causing an increase in pain level the following day.

White noise a rainbow of sound:

If noises affect the quality of your sleep, you might consider some form of "white noise" to mask the distraction. Just as the color white contains the whole spectrum of colors of light, white noise is created by the spectrum of frequencies the human ear can hear.

Sounds of nature

When the ear cannot easily detect a recognizable sound, it is able to block it out. If people talking, or the sound of radio, TV or street noises disturb your sleep, some form of white noise, like turning on a fan, creates a masking noise that allows you to more easily block out the sounds of distraction. If you like the sound of a waterfall more than a fan, you might consider using a "noise conditioner". These are machines that offer a variety of sound choices. Some also have an aromatherapy component. Research studies have shown that the scent of lavender can help people fall asleep more quickly and allow them to sleep longer than usual. In fact, in some studies, the lavender worked as well as their sleeping pills!

COMMENT: It is important to retire to bed early (sundown or before 9:30 pm at the latest) in order to receive the beneficial regenerative electro-magnetic fields of the earth. Sleeping 2 to 5 hours before 12:00 midnight enables our bodies to increase the natural healing powers and immune system necessary to restore health. It also increases the flushing effect of the elimination process that starts in the morning during the elimination cycle. Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible. When light hits the eyes, it disrupts the circadian rhythm of the pineal gland and production of melatonin and seratonin. There also should be as little light in the bathroom as possible if you get up in the middle of the night. (From the 7 Step "Regain Your Health" Program)

In Cipro We Trust
By Jim Lynn

Not long after anthrax was found at NBC, Tom Brokaw held up a pill bottle during a newscast, declaring "In Cipro we trust." On Capitol Hill, politicians lined up for the small white pills after a scare there. The word on everyone's lips: Cipro.

Few people had even heard of Cipro a month ago. Now, Bayer Corp. is more than tripling its production of the drug, the only form of the powerful antibiotic ciprofloxacin approved by the Food and Drug Administration to fight anthrax.

Bayer has promised the government it will be able to deliver 200 million Cipro tablets in the next three months. It shipped 50 million in the last month alone, Bayer spokesman Mark Ryan said.
Thompson said Wednesday that the government will be buying much of the planned output of pills to put in a government stockpile. Our government will pay $1.83 per 500 mg tablet. (1)

The generic name for Cipro, Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, received FDA approval in 1987 and is used to treat a variety of infections, including urinary tract infections and sinusitis. The drug was approved as an anthrax treatment in August last year.

But before you place your trust in Cipro, consider the following:

Common side effects include; nausea, abdominal pain/discomfort, diarrhea, headache, rash, restlessness, and vomiting.

Less common side effects may include: Abnormal dread or fear, achiness, bleeding in the stomach and/or intestines, blood clots in the lungs, blurred vision, change in color perception, chills, confusion, constipation, convulsions, coughing up blood, decreased vision, depression, difficulty in swallowing, dizziness, double vision, drowsiness, eye pain, fainting, fever, flushing, gas, gout flare up, hallucinations, hearing loss, heart attack, hiccups, high blood pressure, hives, inability to fall or stay asleep, inability to urinate, indigestion, intestinal inflammation, involuntary eye movement, irregular heartbeat, irritability, itching, joint or back pain, joint stiffness, kidney failure, labored breathing, lack of muscle coordination, lack or loss of appetite, large volumes of urine, light-headedness, loss of sense of identity, loss of sense of smell, mouth sores, neck pain, nightmares, nosebleed, pounding heartbeat, ringing in the ears, seizures, sensitivity to light, severe allergic reaction, skin peeling, redness, sluggishness, speech difficulties, swelling of the face, neck, lips, eyes, or hands, swelling of the throat, tender, red bumps on skin, tingling sensation, tremors, unpleasant taste, unusual darkening of the skin, vaginal inflammation, vague feeling of illness, weakness, and yellowed eyes and skin. (2)

Serious and fatal reactions have occurred when Cipro was taken in combination with the ophylline (Theo-Dur). These reactions have included cardiac arrest, seizures, status epilepticus (continuous attacks of epilepsy with no periods of consciousness), and respiratory failure.

Safety and effectiveness of Cipro oral tablets and suspension have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

What is discouraging about all of this is the total lack of mention from our government and mainstream media of possible safer alternatives to drugs like Cipro. Specifically, documented studies indicate that therapeutic grade thymem oil (Thyme) is an effective remedy for anthrax and numerous other pathogens. (3)

To understand why, one needs to understand how large drug companies, like Bayer, make their money. These large corporations look at billions of dollars, not millions, as consideration in looking at potential products. Patent laws prevent natural products like thyme oil from being patented. Bayer is free to market thyme oil, but sales would be in the lower millions; Not enough money to whet their corporate appetites. Then, too, there is a limited supply of thyme oil. Production of thyme plants could be increased, but even then sales would not meet expectations. Further, natural products, though they may be effective, do not have the ear of the medical profession.

The simple truth is that our medical system relies heavily on pharmaceutically synthesized, petro-chemical drugs in treating their patients. Patients are seldom told of alternatives to drugs because most doctors are either not aware of them, or are prejudice to their use.

In spite of legally prescribed drugs causing over 100,000 deaths per year, doctors continue prescribing drugs like Cipro as though they are kind of magic bullet. (4) They are not.

So the next time you hear the words "in Cipro we trust," think about what those words mean, and their possible consequences.

"Curbing Stress In Your Home"
By: Brandie Valenzuela

1) Smile and laugh more with your children.

Sometimes when things are going bad for us, we forget to enjoy the simple small things in life. I know that when I am stressed, I tend to not notice those small things that usually make me happy. Make a conscious effort to listen to the interesting and cute comments that your children say -- smile or laugh as appropriate. Consider watching a funny movie or favorite cartoon with them. Above all else, remember, smiling is contagious, whether phony or not.

2) Don't sweat the small stuff.
I know it is much easier said that done, but it is so important. Stop worrying about the small stuff. There are so many more important things in life to concern yourself with -- why waste time and energy on things that aren't truly important?

3) Stop being a perfectionist.
This won't apply to everyone, but there are many parents who could live lives with much less stress if only they were not so much of a perfectionist. Perfectionists tend to push this trait onto their children, which creates added stress for them. Do yourself and your children a favor and stop pushing for perfection.

4) Don't procrastinate.
How many of us parents create our own stress because we put important tasks off to the last possible minute? Instead of waiting to do things, learn to get it done right away. Stop making excuses and do it now!

5) Pick your battles more carefully.
I know that sometimes when I am stressed, I tend to nit-pick everything. If you do this, the first step is to recognize your behavior and then remember to pick your battles more carefully. Is your toddler trying to wear the same pair of pants for the third day in a row? Remember, years from now, this won't be what's important.

6) Watch your Internet time.
Ever notice how we have more "time saving" gadgets and gizmos today, but less time and more stress? I have a friend who tells the story of how she just "signed online for a minute to check her email" and the next thing she knew she was on for three hours. That is a long time when you consider that she was only going to be on for a quick minute or two. Learn to watch your Internet and email time. Set a timer and get off the computer when it goes off -- no excuses!

7) Keep a gratitude journal.
Whether you use a beautiful journal with dried flowers on its cover, or a simple spiral bound notebook that cost .20 cents at a back-to-school sale, designate a place to write down everyday the top five things in your life you are grateful for. Focusing once a day will slowly turn your thoughts more to what is going on good in your life, rather than what isn't.

8) Learn to say no.
Chances are that when you were born, no one gave you a blessing to be a future super-parent. If you are someone who takes on too much in your life, learn to stop. Realize that you don't have to say yes to everything and guess what? You also don't have to give reasons or excuses for saying no. If you are asked to do something that you really don't wish to commit to at the time, simply say, "I am sorry, I really can't commit to that right now".

9) Provide service for others.
I know that many of my tips focus on doing less, but sometimes when we are stressed, the best thing to do is to provide service to others. Many people find it is rewarding to stop thinking about ourselves and our own problems, but to think about someone else -- which can often times help us to see that our problems really aren't so bad. If you are low on time, but have the money, consider picking up an already prepared meal or $10 worth of essential groceries for a struggling family. If you are low on money, but have the time, offer to do yard work for a person who can't do it themselves. Make it a family effort and it won't take much time at all.

10) Get a pet.
While getting a new pet isn't for everyone, studies have shown that people who have pets report fewer minor health problems. As with the idea of providing service for someone, having a pet helps you to think about something else other than the problems that are going on in your life.

The Search For Good Health

The search for good health is often confusing because of the sheer number of products claiming to be the ultimate cure. Modern medical science has made miraculous discoveries over the years that have been extremely beneficial to us all. Unfortunately, at the same time, far too many high-tech "miracle cure" products (medical "disasters" waiting to happen) have been released to an unsuspecting public that has caused untold suffering. The statistics for doctor and drug induced deaths and illnesses each year is astounding! Yet, you will rarely ever hear about them.

Let just a few people get sick on a natural vitamin or alternative therapy, however, and the FDA, the medical establishment, and the drug companies are screaming to take the product off the market and punish the wicked people selling it. This is truly no exaggeration. The health and medical "experts" in this country have a definite double standard by which they compare pharmaceuticals and natural remedies. A drug company can show a statistical improvement of 6% with their new "wonder drug", with limited benefits and dozens of side-effects, and still be hailed as the savior of us all. An all natural remedy can heal 50% or more and, because it couldn't cure 100% of the time, will still be called a dismal failure. Does this picture seem a bit skewed to you? It definitely appears out of whack to me. Read the article from USA Today about the FDA's use of experts with ties to the chemical and drug industries and prepare to be surprised.

What's the answer? Information and awareness. And a return to customer oriented medicine. Stop believing everything your doctor tells you without asking questions. Make him/her treat you as an adult who has a right to know what you are putting into your body, not an overgrown child who has to blindly follow directions with no questions asked because you are too stupid to understand. If you ask a question and your doctor won't answer or is too busy to talk to you in the first place, get another doctor. There are lots of them around, just look in the yellow pages. More and more dedicated doctors are breaking away from the combined iron fist of the drug companies, the medical establishment, and the FDA, and finding natural alternatives that work. Unfortunately, they are being hounded in every way imaginable to prevent their successes from happening and close their doors forever. Fortunately, too many people have taken notice, gotten sick of being sick all the time, gotten tired of drugging themselves silly all the time, and, in general, decided there had to be a better way.

Look around you. The tried and true remedies and cures of ages past have been getting a bum rap for too long. There are highly effective cures for most illnesses right under our noses. Just because your AMA-trained doctor doesn't know about them doesn't mean they don't work. Keep an open mind, a willingness to try new things, use common sense, and listen to your body. Good health is obtainable!

Using Essential Oils Around The House

Have you thought about utilizing essential oils in your home? Here are a few ideas to get you going. Half the fun is putting together a special blend that really says home to you.

Kitchens

Wipe down kitchen surfaces with a blend of germ busting essential oils. Put about 500ml (2 cups) of distilled water into a spray bottle and add 8 drops of lavender, 15 drops of lemon and 5 drops of eucalyptus. Shake well before spraying. When wiping out fridges, microwaves etc. add a couple of drops of essential oil to the rinse water. Any of the citrus oils would be a good choice.

To get rid of cooking smells add 3 drops of lemon and 3 drops of orange to an aromalamp.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms can also be wiped down with a blend of germ busting essential oils. Again add 500ml (2 cups) of distilled water to a spray bottle and add 20 - 30 drops of your own special essential oil blend. Essential oils with germ busting properties include: basil, bergamot, eucalyptus, ginger, lavender, lemon, patchouli, petitgrain, rosewood and thyme.

To clean glass and mirrors mix 1 cup (250ml) of distilled water, ¼ cup (62,5ml) vinegar in a spray bottle then add 20 drops of lemon. Shake well before using. This cleans well and leaves a lovely fresh smell. Most of the citrus oils are great for cutting through grease.

Laundry Cupboards

For sweet smelling linen add 1 - 2 of drops of essential oil or blend of essential oils to a cotton ball and pop it onto your linen shelves. I use a cotton ball on each shelf. A blend I enjoy using in my linen cupboard is 10 drops Lime, 4 drops Orange, 3 drops Cinnamon, 1 drop Patchouli. I also use cotton balls in my clothing cupboards; here I use a mixture of Patchouli and Cedarwood. Experiment a little and find a blend you really enjoy.

Potpourri

Potpourri is often used to fragrance various rooms in the house. Gather dried leaves, flowers and small wood shavings. Crush the plant materials to desired size. Place in a wide mouthed glass jar and add your essential oil or blend of essential oil to the mixture. The amount of essential oil you add will depend on the size of your jar. Try 7 – 10 drops. Stir contents well and tighten the lid on the jar. Let the potpourri rest for several days as this will allow the plant material time to absorb the aroma. Lavender on its own is great. For a floral type blend try 4 drops geranium, 2 drops grapefruit and 2 drops petitgrain and for a more exotic blend try 5 drops sandalwood, 2 drop patchouli and 3 drops lime.

Carpets

Make your own carpet freshener. Put 1 cup of cornstarch into a container and add 15 - 30 drops of essential oil or blend of essential oil. Mix well and leave to set for a couple of days. Sprinkle over carpets, leave for ½ - 1 hour the vacuum up. The blend you use will depend on personal taste you could try any of the blends mentioned above. I often you a blend of 10 drops lime, 6 drops mandarin and 4 drops patchouli for my carpets.

To keep your vacuum cleaner smelling fresh add 1 - 2 drops of essential oil to the outside of the dust bag.

MEDICAL INFORMATION

According to USDA's 1994-96 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII), Americans now average 20.5 teaspoons--nearly 3 ounces--of added sugars each day. That's 68.5 pounds per year. And that figure is probably low because of underreporting, says ARS food scientist Shanty Bowman, who is with the agency's Community Nutrition Research Group in Beltsville, Maryland.

As Americans are focusing more and more on dieting, sales for soft drinks and instant teas and coffees with aspartame are soaring. Aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than sugar so much smaller amounts are needed to sweeten. But is it safe? Aspartame contains 3 main ingredients: phenylalanine and aspartic acid, which are both amino acids, and methanol, which is also known as methyl alcohol or wood alcohol. Research suggests that the body does not process the amino acids in aspartame the same way it does natural amino acids, which are found in foods. The aspartame in soda appears to cause an influx of amino acids into the blood stream, which may cause problems. Some people have reported bad reactions from aspartame, including headaches, mood swings, changes in vision, nausea, diarrhea, sleep disorders, memory loss, confusion and even convulsions. Aspartame is highly toxic to people with phenylketonuria, for whom phenylalanine can accumulate and cause brain damage. What should I drink instead? Six to eight glasses per day of distilled water are a great choice. Also consider consuming fresh, organic juices and a diet rich in fresh, organic fruits, which have their own natural juices and are high in vitamin C. Recent studies have shown that test subjects with high vitamin C levels had about half the risk of dying as those with low levels.

COMMENT: Go through your pantry and fridge and throw out EVERYTHING that has aspartame listed as an ingredient. It simply is not worth the risk to consume this product! Stop the diet drinks and give your body pure, clean distilled water. Add 3 tablespoons of organic Apple Cider Vinegar to 1 gallon of distilled water. Apple Cider Vinegar contains 90% of the minerals the body needs.

OXYGEN 2

"Of all the essential nutrients needed by the human, oxygen is the one we must have on a moment to moment basis; we can't live without it even for a few minutes. yet, this is the one nutrient most people don't associate with deficiency problems. Nothing could be further from the truth.

One problem is that oxygen concentrations in and around major cities have been measured as much as 30% below normal. That means that each breath brings in less oxygen. As if this weren't bad enough, most people have developed poor breathing habits, thus further restricting oxygen intake. The resulting oxygen deficiency is having a negative effect on our health and our overall performance. Oxygen deprivation can be associated with all kinds of chronic diseases, including cancer.

Symptoms of Possible Oxygen Deficiency:

Overall body weakness, fatigue, circulation problems, poor digestion, muscle aches and pains, dizziness, depression, memory loss, irrational behavior, irritability, acid stomach, lung problems

Oxygen makes up almost 50% of the earth's crust by weight, 42% of all healthy vegetation, 85% of seawater, 46% of igneous rocks, 47% of much of aerated dry soil.

A common factor in asthma, emphysema, bronchitis and the variations of COPD is insufficient oxygen to the blood.

"The development of cancerous cells is one major consequence of severe oxygen starvation" 1

"Insufficient oxygen in our cells causes pain to be experienced more acutely then when oxygen supplies are ample" Dr. Samuel C. West. The Golden Seven Plus 1. 7th printing.

PUT OXYGEN INTO YOUR BODY NATURALLY - OXY-POWDER is a specially formulated magnesium based compound which releases nascent oxygen by reacting with acids. OXY-POWDER helps rid the digestive tract of unwanted fecal debris, while slowly releasing beneficial nascent oxygen which targets harmful anaerobic bacteria and other toxic materials. It can safely and effectively melt away the compaction from the small intestine, large intestine, and colon. This is important because a clean intestinal tract is necessary for optimal health. Oxy-Powder is also harmless to the good bacteria in the intestinal tract. To order call Global Healing Center at 713-476-0015.

HARDENING OF ARTERIES RAMPANT:

ALL AGES SHOWING SIGNS OF CONDITION

A leading heart journal published a shocking article looking inside the coronary arteries of more than 200 hearts from healthy donors for heart transplantation. The findings? You'd better sit down. Of those 13-19 years of age, 17% had hardening of their coronary arteries. Of 20-29 37%; 30-39 60%; 40-49 71%; 50 years and older 85%. This is an epidemic! It means that if you are 50 or older, you have only a 15 percent chance of NOT already having arteriosclerosis of your coronary arteries - the yellow fatty material that builds up and hardens in your arteries.

Quotations By Wise People against Vaccinations and Immunizations

"The greatest threat of childhood diseases lies in the dangerous and ineffective efforts made to prevent them." Robert Mendelsohn, MD

Harold E Buttram, MD and John Chriss Hoffman

"Vaccination, in subduing one disease, only increases others."
Herbert Spencer in "History of Epidemics in Great Britain"

"The best vaccine against common infectious diseases is an adequate diet."

The World Health Organization

"Man cannot infringe upon nature without paying the penalty, and human blood is incapable of accepting animal pus, serums, or other, and alchemically turning it into a healthy, vital fluid." The Randolph Society

"So it seems that the more vaccine that is used the more the actual infection that comes about." Wm F Koch, MD, PhD, The Survival Factor, 1961

Dr Eva Snead stated, "Vaccination is an illogical practice and may be the underlying cause of illnesses such as cancer, ..." And she continues, "Disorders of the immune system often occur as a consequence of the after-effects of receiving viral vaccines, presumably related to the cell associated immunity responses, where a graft rejection type phenomena may occur." Dr Eva Snead, "Some Call it AIDS ... I Call It Murder", 1992

When our goal is nothing less than good health, depressing the immunity (with vaccinations or toxic chemicals) does not make any sense at all. There is probably not one organ, tissue, or cell not adversely affected by vaccinations; I have listed many and there are many more that I did not list. Do vaccines affect our pancreas, gallbladder, spleen, thymus, thyroid, ... somewhere there is research which shows that it does. Do vaccines cause many diseases? Yes! We have listed many, and there are many more that were not listed (due to space). Do vaccines create health ... NO, as we have shown by their allopathic medical peer-reviewed literature!

Nutrition is the only way to boost our immunity and prevent disease, and Vaccines Prevent Health!

Why Americans Will Believe Almost Anything

By: Dr. Tim O'Shea

If everybody believes something, it's probably wrong. We call that Conventional Wisdom. In America, conventional wisdom that has mass acceptance is usually contrived: somebody paid for it. Examples:

Pharmaceuticals restore health
Vaccination brings immunity
The cure for cancer is just around the corner
When a child is sick, he needs immediate antibiotics
When a child has a fever he needs Tylenol
Hospitals are safe and clean.
America has the best health care in the world.
And many many more

This is a list of illusions, which have cost billions and billions to conjure up. Did you ever wonder why you never see the President speaking publicly unless he is reading? Or why most people in this country think generally the same about most of the above issues?

As the science of mass control evolved, PR firms developed further guidelines for effective copy. Here are some of the gems:

dehumanize the attacked party by labeling and name calling
speak in glittering generalities using emotionally positive words
when covering something up, don't use plain English; stall for time; distract
get endorsements from celebrities, churches, sports figures, street people - anyone who has no expertise in the subject at hand the 'plain folks' ruse: us billionaires are just like you when minimizing outrage, don't say anything memorable, point out the benefits of what just happened, and avoid moral issues

Keep this list. Start watching for these techniques. Not hard to find - look at today's paper or tonight's TV news. See what they're doing; these guys are good!

Our Need for Digestive Enzymes

As Fall approaches, many people's cooking habits change. They don't eat as much fruit or vegetables. More food tends to be cooked.

Did you know that cooking kills enzymes?

Cooking our food at temperatures over 118 degrees, microwaving, and processing kills all the enzymes in that food. We can eat all the healthy food and take all the vitamins and supplements we want but unless the enzymes are there, the food will be ineffective in maintaining a healthy body.

The body is born with its own store of digestive enzymes. Another way to think of it is like having your own bank account of enzymes. By putting cooked, microwaved, and processed foods (foods with no live enzymes left) into the body it is then forced to draw on its own account of enzymes, metabolic and digestive, to do the job.

Eventually we deplete our account and the body has to completely rely on itself, pulling from the enzyme and immune system to digest food instead of rebuilding the body and fighting illness.

Health problems caused by lack of enzymes:

* Many of today's food allergies stem from the lack of certain enzymes. Joint pain and gout come from undigested proteins; fats and minerals that form uric acid crystals that in turn get caught in joints.

* Yeast and fungal growth can start with undigested foods in the blood stream and are compounded by the white flour and sugars that we eat which feed the yeast and fungus.

* Extreme fatigue may be caused by an inability to digest proteins and fats, which cause the bold cells to clump together and not circulate like they should. When the blood is clumped it can't carry as much oxygen and can result in fatigue and slow, muddled thinking.

* Indigestion, Gas and Bloating

Bottom line, what you eat and assimilate is what you have for your building blocks to better health. I cannot emphasize good enzymes enough. If you have gas, bloating, a full stomach long after eating, or eat a lot of cooked food, you need digestive enzymes.

THANKS-GIVING

By: Loretta Lanphier, CCN

One week from today Americans will be observing a day in which hopefully we will reflect and be thankful for all the blessings which we experience in our daily lives. For many it will only be a day of over-eating, football games and naps with a momentary thought of thanksgiving. But for those of us who are aware of what being thankful and giving really means it will be a day of inward celebration.

Being thankful should be an everyday occurrence for all of us. It is so easy to focus on all the evil in the world and all the bad happenings in our personal lives. In fact, it is usually expected, in that over 90% of the news reported over the airwaves is negative. Positive circumstances do not seem to get the recognition that negative happenings acquire. I often require (yes, I said require in that this is not always easy for me) myself to think about just how blessed that I am. I live in a "free" country in that I can go and do as I like. I am blessed to have a roof over my head, a home where I can be warm and comfortable, indoor plumbing, electric lights, a vehicle to take me where I want/need to go, clothes to cover my back, food and drink, a job that I look forward to each day, etc. Most of these are things that we take for granted and expect to have at our disposal at any time. Do we realize what percentage of people in this world does NOT have these necessities? It is higher than most of us think.

I know from experience that giving of ourselves, our time, our money, our possessions will cure just about any emotional problem that we may be experiencing. How strange it is that our problems seem to vanish when we realize the problems of others and actually do something about it. We should be teaching our children, through example, just what giving really encompasses so that maybe the next generation will do better in this area than we have done. Do we freely give of our time or is it just that…OUR TIME! Can we stop our hurried lives to help a neighbor, a friend, a co-worker, a family member? Can we part with a few dollars to buy some groceries for a family that has lost a job, for a friend that is having financial problems, for a few Christmas gifts for a child that has no parents? Can we pause for a few moments to smile at someone who seems to be carrying the weight of the world on his/her shoulders? Can we LISTEN patiently to a friend or family member’s problem and offer to give suggestions or help?

We are entering the season of the year in which THANKS and GIVING should abound. I would suggest not only at this time of year should we be experiencing this, but every day of the year. I encourage each of you to put THANKS and GIVING into each day of your life. Make a list every day of five things that you are thankful for and each day try to give of yourself at least once. Some will ask…So what do I get out of this? Must we ALWAYS have to get something in return? How about the satisfaction that for a few moments I have taken my mind off of myself and my problems and focused on the needs of another person…it’s called self-sacrifice—something that too many of us know too little about.

Feeling down, depressed, unloved, etc? You won’t find a permanent answer in a bottle of pills or by paying huge amounts of money for someone to "listen" to you. Look inside yourself…what REALLY matters in your life?…what qualities and talents do you have to share? Get up, Get dressed, Get out and share those attributes with those that need your help. You will be amazed at how seemingly insignificant your problems become when held up to the light of the problems of others. And the personal satisfaction of knowing that you have given of yourself without expecting anything in return in absolutely priceless.
