What Is SSKI?

by Dr. Edward Group DC, NP, DACBN, DCBCN, DABFM Published on , Last Updated on

SSKI is a saturated solution of potassium iodide. In this form, potassium iodide can be administered through a solution, as opposed to tablet form. (The tablet form is provided during emergencies involving radiation exposure.) Two standard drops of SSKI contain about the same amount of iodine as a medicinal tablet of 130mg.

SSKI should not be taken as a dietary supplement. The amount required would be too high for daily supplementation. It does provide many health benefits when needed. Some of these include…

A Powerful Expectorant

For individuals suffering from respiratory conditions, SSKI can increase the water content of mucus. This makes it easier to break up and expel mucus that would otherwise restrict breathing.

In Emergency Situations for Hyperthyroidism

SSKI will be given to an individual suffering from a Thyroid Storm. This occurs when the thyroid releases excessive amounts of the hormone, thyroxine. The application of the potassium iodide stops the secretion of this hormone.

Topical Application

People have used potassium iodide for centuries to address a variety of skin disorders and infections. Current research supports this, noting that SSKI may be the only choice for infectious and redness-related skin disorders after other approaches have failed. [1]

For Protection from Radiation

Potassium iodide can provide immediate protection from a radioactive event. Since the thyroid cannot distinguish between stable and radioactive iodine, taking SSKI (or a potassium iodide tablet) can fill the thyroid with stable iodine. This disallows the thyroid from absorbing the radioactive iodine. [2] [3]

As a Surgical Preparation

SSKI has been used to reduce blood flow and blood loss during thyroid surgery. This continues as a standard practice, however, some studies have noted this may not be necessary for all patients. [4]

To Balance Fungal Overgrowth

Fungus like Sporothrix schenckii can be effectively addressed with saturated solutions of potassium iodide. Researchers have noted both the success and low cost of this option versus others. [5]

As a Remedy for Iodine Deficiency

Iodine deficiency can lead to metabolic imbalances and problems with neural development in children. Recent research has shown fetuses that suffer even mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy demonstrate reduced cognitive function that does not improve with iodine therapy through childhood. [6]

Iodine deficiency is a worldwide problem, and SSKI can help iodine deficiency and revitalize iodine levels. It can also offer an effective and low cost option for a wide range of medical conditions.

I have had numerous health issues and have managed to completely reverse some of them using Lugols Iodine, namely Hashimotos, Fibrocystic Breast Disorder and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. I also have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue that are severely triggered by Electro Hypersensitivity. I find it extremely difficult to even go to public places anymore as this is so severe. As I’m now Menopausal as well, and still obviously deficient in Iodine I decided to try the SSKI solution a week ago. I have to say, after an initial detoxification for a few days, my energy levels have risen to almost where they were before I got sick. The last 3 days I’ve been so active in the garden without any repercussion. I’m still coughing up mucus that seems to be breaking up but other detox symptoms have cleared. I love this product and won’t stop it now.

  • Amisha

Am grateful you are feeling better. When you mention sski solution is this referring to lugols?

  • Debra Martin

    Hi Amisha,
Thank you. No I was using Lugols initially for 2 years but because I’ve had such a hard time with Estrogen Dominance, I switched over to the SSKI solution which is just the Potassium Iodide in a concentrated solution as it works on converting bad Estrogen to good and apparently it will still help all the other issues. Lugols is Potassium Iodide plus Iodine.

  • jakartah

    Hello,
How are you feeling now? I have been doing Lugol’s, etc, for a few years now and have seen some improvement, but am considering trying the SSKI. Many of my symptoms were/are the same as yours. Where are you buying your product? It seems like its a little difficult to find.Thank you!

  • Michele

I read in a previous article that SSKI needs to be prescribed by your Dr.

  • jakartah

I ordered some online. I guess I have no idea if it is for real or not, but I haven’t died yet….but if I would wait for a doctor to ever get on the stick, I probably would have died a long time ago…so over doctors and their BS.

  • Debra Martin

Hello Jakartah, so sorry for the delay, I only just found this message.
I am in Australia so I buy my SSKI from an online compounding chemist here. I used the SSKI solution until everything balanced and have returned now to Lugols. I also Inclined my bed by 6 inches and treated a severe H.Pylori infection and my Thyroid is working properly again. So much inflammation has gone down.

  • Debra Martin

I agree, we have to take our health into our own hands. There are different dosages of SSKI so if one is not working for you, try another one. Mine gives me 240mg in 8 drops which is the loading dose. One drop maintenance dose is 30mg.

  • Catherine

    Hi Debra,

Thank you for sharing. One question: Did the SSKI work for dropping your estrogen or increasing your progesterone? I have estrogen dominance with severe chronic bloating. I eat very well and have had all tests come back negative (including colonoscopy). I do not want to use progesterone cream until I have exhausted more natural means. I swim 50 laps every other days and bike 30-40 miles a week. this chronic bloating is killing me. Any advice?

  • Debra Martin

    Hi Catherine,
So sorry for the late reply, I can’t seem to get notifications of replies. Yes the SSKI definitely dropped my Estrogen dominance. I also take Calcium D-Glucurate to stop bloating and it works really well as it keeps a detoxification pathway in the Liver working and my Liver detox pathways were compromised by a severe H.Pylori infection and heavy metals. Wow you do a lot of exercise. I commend you on your fitness level. I hope the SSKI works for you Catherine. Also check your Vitamin D (along with Vitamin K2 to stop toxicity) levels are kept high as this is a great Aromotase Inhibitor that prevents Testosterone being converted to Estrogen. Because you do a lot of leg exercise, you would have good Testosterone but it may be getting converted to Estrogen.

I have some questions if anyone can help.

I’ve heard some people take this for Asthma by the gram. In terms of dosage? Would you spread it out during the day? And if so what’s the latest you should take it? I’ve been told not to take lugol’s after 2pm because of increased energy.

Do you increase the dose slowly depending on how you react? I had numb fingers after 3 drops for example, the first time I took SSKI.

What would you advise over the long term? i.e. should you take SSKI for asthma in the same way as you would a steroid inhaler? which is pretty much for the rest of your life, daily? Or use it like a reliever only when you need it?

I was originally on Lugol’s would you advise going back on that after a while?

    Thanks!

  • Debra Martin

    Hi Catherine,
Yes the SSKI worked to drop my Estrogen levels. I lost the bloating, cysts and middle weight gain with it.

Eliminate all dairy and grains and have a tsp papaya seeds every morning on an empty stomach. Freeze the left over ones. Check out (raw) food combining! Find the cause of your bloating! All the best! Fresh ginger and turmeirc and cardamom also help!
