99 Things You Probably Didn’t Know You Can Compost

Anybody that has a composting bin or compost pile at their house knows that old apple cores, banana peels and potato skins can be composted. But many people who compost at home are unaware of the sheer vastness of every day waste that can easily be thrown in their compost bin.

For example, did you know that you can compost an old tea bag? Old spices? Pencil shavings? How about sticky notes? Yes, each of those items can be composted!

In fact, there are many items that you can compost, and the following list will get you started with the first ninety-nine. And the best news? If everyone began to compost at home on a regular basis, the world’s landfills would be drastically reduced.

If you are composting for an organic garden use organic starting materials. Some of the items below I would not recommend for organic gardens. For clarity, I will specify those items below.

The Basics:

  1. All organic vegetable and fruit matter including rinds, skins, shells, seeds, cores and peels
  2. Old leaves & hay
  3. Used coffee grounds
  4. Paper coffee filters
  5. Grass clippings
  6. Egg shells

The Health Benefits of Beta-Glucanase

What is Beta-Glucanase?

Beta-Glucanase represents a group of carbohydrase enzymes which break down glycosidic bonds within beta-glucan. These glucans also create up to 60% of the cell wall of many forms of fungal organisms such as C. albicans and candidal biofilm (the common experience of candida in the gut).

Beta glucans are a polysaccharide made of glucose molecules linked together into long chains that humans cannot readily digest. In more familiar terms they are cellulose plant fiber, cereal bran fiber, and parts of certain types of fungi, yeast, and bacteria. As a kind of indigestible fiber, they may become viscous in the intestinal tract and slow peristalsis (intestinal contractions).

Beta-glucans are health-promoting in that they act as intestinal fiber, which may help reduce high serum cholesterol levels and help create regularity through bulk formation. Water-soluble fibers may also help to regulate blood sugar and reduce the likelihood of developing colon related diseases.

Due to these important benefits, it is important to include foods with beta-glucans in the diet, but it is equally important to have enough of the beta-glucanase enzyme. Why? Because Beta glucanase hydrolyzes these glucans, reducing viscosity and helping to restore natural peristalsis. This enhances the digestive process, increasing the overall nutritional value of your food.

Vitamin D and Obesity in Children

A few months back, the University of Michigan School of Public Health published the results of research that suggests that inadequate levels of vitamin D could be a key factor in increased fat accumulation in children, and could be an important weapon in the fight against childhood obesity.

Vitamin D and Obesity

According to their findings, there is a strong correlation between vitamin D deficiency and the rapid build-up of abdominal body fat. This specific type of fat is often associated with an increased risk of heart disease, type-2 diabetes, as well as numerous other serious medical concerns.

In order to better understand the link between these two factors, researchers first measured the vitamin D blood serum levels of 479 children, ages 5 to 12, living in Bogota, Columbia, and then monitored their weight gain for a 30-month period. Due to the inherent shortcomings with relying solely on the body mass index standard of gauging body fat, the researchers opted to use a three-prong approach which took into consideration not only BMI, but also waist circumference and a more advanced technique know as the subscapular-to-tricep skinfold ratio.

Call for Action: Online Petition for Banning TSA Groping in Texas

Earlier today, I was emailed an online petition to ban the intrusive groping of travelers in Texas at the hands of the TSA.

TSA Pat-Down

This strikes a chord with me, because not long ago, my family and I were traveling to New York and we had a negative experience with TSA. We elected not to go through the full body scanner, instead opting for the pat-down. Afterwards, my son was really shaken-up by it. While the TSA agent whom performed the pat-down was a professional, my son still did not like some stranger touching him in that manner.

I, for one, think it’s time to put a stop to this. If you agree, please take a few moments to visit the linked site and sign the petition.

In the meantime, here’s a little about the bill

Debbie McKee, Interim State Coordinator for Campaign for Liberty:

Landmark legislation to stop the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from groping travelers without probable cause has passed an important vote in the Texas House. On the evening of May 12th HB 1937 was given unanimous approval by voice vote on second reading. HB 1937, authored by Representative David Simpson (R-Longview), is the first bill in the country that would actively restrict the TSA’s intrusive screening practices to pass a legislative vote.
“HB 1937 is a significant step forward in the protection of our constitutional and civil liberties,” said Rep. Simpson. “Groping innocent citizens does little to enhance security but it does much to reduce our freedom and dignity. I am very thankful that members of both parties have joined together to defend our citizens’ dignity against the TSA’s egregious screening methods.”
HB 1937 would make it a criminal act for security personnel to touch a person’s private areas without probable cause as a condition of travel or as a condition of entry into a public place. This bill is not intended to contravene any federal statutes currently in place.[1]

Better Business Bureau Award for Global Healing Center

We are very excited to announce that we have been recognized by the Better Business Bureau and given the ‘Winner of Distinction’ award for the 5th year in a row!

On May 4, 2011, the Better Business Bureau held a luncheon to recognize businesses and non-profits for their achievements and commitment to overall excellence and quality in the workplace. Proceeds from the event help fund the BBB Education Foundation which educates consumers about scams and fraudulent business practices in the Greater Houston area.

It is an honor to be recognized by the BBB once again. We have an excellent team here at Global Healing Center, and we all work hard to make sure our customers are not only satisfied, but also on the right path to a long, healthy life.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Better Business Bureau for this award. And also thank the staff here at Global Healing Center for going above and beyond the call of duty. Your hard work has been recognized once again!
