As we enter into the flu season, chances are that many people will experience the pesky effects of a cold or flu. Highly contagious, colds are the name we give for over 100 mild viral influenza forms floating in the air, on surfaces and in our bodies.

There are many natural ways to both prevent and reduce the symptoms of the common cold and raise your immunity during this vulnerable season. If you follow these recommendations, chances are your flu catching ability may be prevented, wont last as long, or be quite so severe.

1. Vitamin D

Flu Remedy - Vitamin D

Boosting up on Vitamin D helps to prevent colds and flu. This may be related to the necessary role this vitamin plays in the protection and lubrication of many of the body’s principle organ systems. It also boosts cellular growth and immune cell activity, and lowers the inflammatory response. I recommend 15 minutes daily of natural sunlight, consuming more foods with vitamin d and possibly taking a vitamin D3 supplement.

The Times of London recently published an article covering the effects of Vitamin D in children as a flu preventative. While it may not be a huge surprise to those of you who regularly frequent this blog, to much of the medical scientific community, it is.

Researchers at Japan’s Jikei University School of Medicine in Tokyo conducted the double blind, fully randomized study during the 2008-2009 winter season. All said, 354 children whom participated in the study were administered 1200 IUs of either vitamin D or placebo for a 3-month period. By the second month of the test, the research team began to notice some initial changes in the experimental group as compared to the control sample.

Even though the original write-up found in the Times does a great job of summarizing the overall findings of the study, here is the official conclusion from the researchers:

Conclusion of the study, as published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition:

“This study suggests that vitamin D3 supplementation during the winter may reduce the incidence of influenza A, especially in specific subgroups of schoolchildren.” [1]

It doesn’t get much more straight forward than that.

Oregano oil is widely known as a potent germ-killer, anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Not only is it highly respected within the natural health community, it is also being widely studied within the scientific community for its vast medical uses.

In research done on the oil, it has been found that it could supercede many commonly-used pain killers, such as aspirin and even morphine. Oregano oil also has extremely high levels of free-radical-fighting antioxidants, agents that protect the body from the development of chronic conditions over time.

Oregano oil may also aid in the prevention and treatment of a variety of common infectious ailments including the common flu, psoriasis, eczema, Athlete’s foot, yeast infections and bacterial infections.

Will Onions Help Fight the Flu?

Category: Health News,Natural Health,Organic Living

Recently there has been some e-mails circulating online regarding the use of onions for reducing or preventing flu symptoms. I have been asked to comment on this and give my opinion on the validity of this remedy. So here is what I have found.

What centuries of grandmothers have instinctively known is now being confirmed by everyone from modern scientists to naturopathic doctors. Onions may have the ability to ward off and relieve symptoms of the common flu. And in a world where, according to the CDC, many Americans will get the seasonal flu every year, the simple method of boiling onions into a drinkable broth may be a good practice to return to.

Moreover, the outbreak of H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, has caused many people to consider getting flu vaccinations that, in my opinion, will do more harm than good. Prevention is the best method, and the following post will offer some insight into this ancient technique of using onions for flu prevention.

How Onions Help with the Flu

The idea that onions could ward off disease through their potent medicinal properties hails back thousands of years. Ancient Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine revered onions for their anti-inflammatory and congestion-relieving properties. The Ancient Greeks rubbed onions on sore muscles and the Native Americans used them to ward off the common cold and flu.
