Many have said that our country literally runs on coffee. In my opinion, many people are addicted to large amounts of the energy from caffeine that coffee provides, causing us to feel extreme ups and downs in our nervous system.

Is Coffee Good or Bad For You?

Caffeine is a highly addictive compound that many people have come to depend on for the perception of increased energy. Caffeine keeps you going by preventing the chemical adenosine from telling the brain it’s time to relax.

The result is a surge of unnatural energy; but over time, the brain becomes accustomed to the threshold and requires even greater amounts of caffeine to provide the same increase in alertness. This is what makes caffeine products such as coffee so addictive and it explains why the lines at coffee shops are always so long.

The Dangers of Energy Drinks

Energy drinks claim to provide people with increased energy levels that will keep them active & alert. Energy drinks are sold in grocery stores, convenience stores, bars, clubs, and in some areas, even schools. Are energy drinks safe to drink? Most natural health professionals say no.

Do You Know What’s In Energy Drinks?

Most energy drinks contain at least as much caffeine as a standard eight-ounce cup of coffee (~80mg). To put it into perspective, a 12oz. soda contains 18-48mg of caffeine. In addition to large doses of caffeine, energy drinks contain excessive amounts of sugar & legal herbal stimulants.

Children in school certainly do not need to be consuming any type of beverage that contains stimulants, particularly when they are combined with sugar. Despite manufacturer claims to the contrary, marketing of energy drinks is targeted to high school kids, and adults who are under 30 years of age.

Are there drugs in our drinking water?
Did you know that when you ingest or are injected with prescription drugs, your body doesn’t necessarily use all it takes in? It’s true. Excess drugs are excreted as waste material.

That’s good news for your body since pharmaceuticals are very hard on your system in the first place. However, it’s not good news for the ecosystem, since these drug residues work their way into our waterways and municipal water processing plants.

Things you need to know about municipal water

Tap water has been unsafe for drinking for a very long time. Tap water has toxic chemicals, some known carcinogens, added to make it “safe” for drinking. Three of the poisons that can be found in faucet water are chlorine, fluoride, and arsenic, a Category 1 carcinogen (cancer causing agent).

Now, the newest acknowledgment of prescription drugs in the waterways is just one more toxin added to the already contaminated water. Prescription medications that end up in the water supply are not easily filtered.

The drugs are not present in large quantities but they are a contaminant to the body. This means, you may be ingesting them continuously over a period of years. And, we don’t yet know what will be the long-term effects of such intake.

Studies are showing that the effects are already manifesting in fish (male fish producing female egg yolk proteins). And even earthworms and zooplankton. Antibiotics for example are less and less effective as treatments for ailments in humans, due to the excessive prescribing practices. Bacteria have the ability to adapt to the antibiotics. Antibiotics in open water, gives bacteria more time to mutate.
