10 Reasons to Buy Your Fruits & Veggies at Your Local Farmer’s Market

Category: Healthy Foods, Natural Health, Organic Living

Which of these two scenarios sounds more vibrant for overall quality of life and health?

The wind on your face, the sun on your skin, you talk with a local farmer about the size and taste of this year’s harvest of peaches, as you pop a slice in your mouth. After tasting several different varieties, you choose your favorite one, walking away with a great memory of the farmer in your mind.

Or… You stand shivering in the freezer section at your local mega-mart, your eyes begin to glaze over from the halogen lights and the neon-colored cardboard boxes containing substances claimed to be food products? You decide on the one with the least amount of additives and make your way to the self-check-out line, excited to get in your car and out of the supermarket.

Clearly, most of us would agree that the first scenario, at the local farmer’s market, is much more appealing than a trip to a big chain grocery store. But what, besides the aesthetic factor, are some of the other benefits of supporting your local farmers market? Here are ten reasons why I believe you should shop at your local farmers market.

Warning: Oleander extract is made from a highly-lethal, poisonous plant. The following post is meant to offer exciting insight into emerging scientific evidence of its use as a natural remedy. Taking this extract without the guidance of an expert can lead to serious health complications, including death.

Recently I have had alot of questions regarding the benefits and risks of taking Oleander Extract for cancer as well as the bird or swine flu and other conditions. I think that this plant has amazing properties and is definitely worth writing a post about.

With the onslaught of swine flu throughout the global community, there is a new push towards acquiring and stockpiling drugs that can be used to treat potentially lethal strains of influenza.

According to medical science there is a pharmaceutical treatment option available called Tamiflu, that they say will treat swine flu.

But little do consumers know that there is a natural component within this mass-produced pharmaceutical. And what is this powerful ingredient? None other than the common herb star anise.

In fact, most people are unaware that over 40% of all pharmaceutical medications come from plant botanicals, including everything from common aspirin to powerful cancer-fighting medications such as tamoxifen.[1]

The Origins of Star Anise

Star anise, or Illicium verum, is a native plant of Asia, commonly used in traditional societies to spice food, reduce intestinal gas, aid in digestion and act as a powerful diuretic medicinal herb.

It is also known to promote vitality and vigor in the human system, and is a common ingredient in the French liqueur Pernod. This fragrant, licorice-spiced plant is now playing a starring role in one of the most sought-after drugs on the planet: Tamiflu.

Codex

Imagine a world where you need a doctor’s prescription (and thus, health insurance), to buy your every-day organic health supplements.

Imagine a world where some of your most-trusted vitamins and supplements are not even on the market!

If this sounds like a bad scene from Big Brother, think again. Our government may be advancing towards giving more and more power to the Codex Alimentarius trade commission, an organization created to limit and control the freedom to buy every day supplements, vitamins, minerals, and even organic foods.

Dust Mites: A Microscopic Threat to Your Family’s Health

Dust Mite

Dust mites are tiny, microscopic bugs, that are commonly found in human habitats, such as your house, couch, bed or carpet. They are able thrive in our living environment, because they live off of our dead skin cells, and the dander from our pets.

Unfortunately, even if you do your best to keep your house clean, we are still vulnerable to dust mites. Cleaning alone will not counteract the problem due to the fact that the average human gives off 5-10 grams of dead skin cells each week and about 3lbs per year.

In this sense, despite the most regimented of cleaning schedules, the dust mites in your home will have plenty to sustain them. Furthermore, the average house dust mite reproduces at an astonishingly rapid rate. The effects of this plethora of dust mites in our homes can have a significant role in causing health problems.

Dust mites excrete an average of 20 droppings of waste each day. Many people are highly allergic to these droppings, and scientists are beginning to correlate dust mites to asthma, as well as other allergic symptoms.

How to Get Rid of Mold: 15 Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

How to get rid of mold

A few days ago, I wrote an article about the Dangers of Mold, and the response I received was overwhelming. Everybody wanted to know more about mold. In fact, within a few days of publishing the post, I got a couple dozen emails asking how to get rid of mold.

So, I wanted to share my personal tips that I use at my home, as well as here in the office. Please feel free to drop your tips in the comment section below.

How to Get Rid of Mold:

  1. Investigate your home or office for moisture leakage. If you find any moisture leaks, clean them up with a dry towel immediately and find the source of the leak. Consider hiring a professional if the leak does not stop or if you are dealing with a plumbing issue. Controlling moisture leaks in your home or place of work will reduce the mold’s ability to thrive.
  2. Mold loves warm and wet places. If you live in a place with humidity levels of 70% or more, you must particularly take heed to prevent toxic moldy air. Invest in a high-quality dehumidifier and test your home for mold over-growth.
  3. Temperatures above 75° F, as well as poorly lit rooms and unmoving air, can actually create more mold. Keep fresh air moving in your home, as well as bright sunlight coming in through your windows. This will help reduce toxic mold.
  4. Open a window while you take a shower, if possible.
  5. Change air filters regularly in heating and air-conditioning vents.
  6. Invest in a good quality air purification system that employs both a HEPA filter and UV & negative ion technologies. In my opinion, this will give you the best results when cleaning your air.
  7. Keep your home at a moderate temperature, at around 69-73° F and keep the humidity level at 54% and below.
  8. Make sure your clothes dryer has an anti-humidity vent.
  9. Check closets for mold growth. This is especially important if you have ever placed wet or damp clothing in your closets. If you find mold in your closet, wash your clothes immediately to help clean any possible mold spores. I would recommend using Soap Nuts.
  10. Protect your breathing passages when removing active or dead mold. Wear a mask, eye protection and protective gloves that filter mold.
  11. When cleaning, slightly wet the mold to lessen the amount of airborne spores in the breathing atmosphere while you are cleaning. This can be done with a wet cloth.
  12. Scrub hard surfaces infested in mold with a non-ammonia soap. Non-toxic, organic soap is best for the environment.
  13. Porous surface cannot be cleaned of mold. Things like moldy carpeting, drywall, wall-paper, fabric, or other porous surfaces, must be completely removed and replaced from your home or office.
  14. If you have mold on the structural support of your home or office building, it may not be cleaned out by scrubbing alone. It may have to be sanded. Don’t forget to wear the appropriate protective coverings.
  15. Remember, the best prevention for mold is to KEEP THINGS DRY and always use a good air purification system!

Do you of any other ways to get rid of mold? Please add any mold removal tips in the comment section below.

The Dangers of Mold & Mildew in your Home or Office

Category: Health Dangers, Warning
Author: Dr. Edward Group @ 3:14 pm

No matter who you are, or where you live, everyone needs to reduce the amount of mold and mildew in the air they are breathing in. If you smell a musty odor in your home or workplace, there is a good chance that it is probably mold or mildew.

Mold Spores

Of course, if you actually see mold in your home or office, then you know you have a problem. The bad news is, most of the toxic mold floating around in our air is actually invisible to the naked eye, but still may be seriously affecting your health.

Ancient oriental medicine tells us that clean, fresh air, is one of the most important components of not only physical, but also mental health. Simply put, without clean air, the body cannot function properly. When the body is not functioning properly, the mind cannot function with ease and clarity.

The word disease literally means, “dis-ease,” or being in a place where the body is not at ease. Without oxygen, we cannot live. With unclean air, we may be able to sustain ourselves, but we will not be at ease, or free of disease.

This is one of the reasons why the presence of mold and mildew in our indoor air has been clinically associated with more than just allergic reactions. Some studies show a link between airborne mold spores and depression, and even death!

Many similar studies have shown that the average human being breathes in an incredibly high amount of toxins from environmental air. In fact, with each breath, we take in more toxic substances and less of the vital oxygen that we need, than ever before.

Announcement: Dr. Group Awarded Second Diplomate Award!

American Board of Functional Medicine
© dabfm.org

I was recently awarded my second diplomate, this time for functional medicine, through The American Board of Functional Medicine (ABFM). This is a great honor for myself, as well as Global Healing Center, as The American Board of Functional Medicine stands for only the most superior standards in functional medicine. “Doctors who achieve this status have demonstrated to their peers and to the public that they have the excelled clinical judgment, skills and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent natural patient care.”

What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is, first and foremost, medicine that is all natural and safe for improving health and living. This approach, as well as the approach I always try to take, is that the most important part of dealing with disease is to start with the root problem, as well as primary prevention options, before the imbalance turns into a more serious chronic, or even lethal disease. Functional medicine treats the person, not just the symptoms of a “disease.” It also addresses lifestyle factors and relationships between physiological factors in the body.

The Board is an independent evaluation organization that ensures that doctors with a functional medicine approach, have met or exceeded the requirements set forth by the Board. The ABFM states that it “holds itself accountable to the profession of functional medicine, to the patients they serve, and to the public.”

Receiving this second diploma from the ABFM reaffirms both the Global Healing Center’s, as well as my own, commitment to treating each and every individual as an intricate web of mind and body, drawn towards a very real and possible state of vibrant health through natural health and organic living.

The Hidden Formaldehyde In Everyday Products

Category: Natural Health
Author: Dr. Edward Group @ 4:46 pm

Embalming Fluid

Producers are tricky, and their business sometimes involves tricking consumers. They trick us into buying very handy products for cleaning, deodorizing, softening, smoothing, and beautifying that often contain dangerous chemicals.

If the word “formaldehyde” doesn’t remind you of an embalmed body on a cold steel table, it should!

Formaldehyde has been used for decades to embalm dead bodies for open casket burials. It is a preservation fluid that replaces the blood, it is a recognized cancer causing agent (carcinogen) by the National Cancer Institute, and oh, by the way, it is in most of the products you buy and use around your home, even the materials your home was built with!

Is My Home Embalmed?

It might surprise you to know that much of the shelving, furniture, wall finishes, carpet, cabinetry and flooring in your home could contain this dangerous chemical. Formaldehyde can also be found in these building materials:
  • Glue
  • Plywood
  • Fiberboard
  • Insulation
  • Particleboard
  • Timber Paneling

The Benefits of Ozonated Olive Oil

Category: Health News, Natural Health, Organic Living
Author: Dr. Edward Group @ 12:18 pm

One of our in-house favorites, Ozonated Olive Oil is a powerful natural remedy for a variety of health concerns, most of which involve the lack of health and radiance of the skin. I wanted to write up something, in order to provide you with an overview of just exactly what this healing oil is, and how it works.

What is Ozonated Olive Oil?

Ozonated Olive Oil

To make ozonated olive oil, you must take high-quality, organic, extra-virgin, cold pressed olive oil and put it through a process of “ozone injection.” This is done by bubbling ozone into the liquid for an extended period of time. Most companies producing this use a coronal discharge ozone generator. This is the cheap method and can lead to contamination. For purity and quality a cold plasma ozone generator should always be used.

When searching for a high quality source of ozonated olive oil you should ask the company if they are using a coronal or cold plasma unit. A reactive gas, ozone is very hard to stabilize, but by passing it through the oil, contained within an ozone resistant container, the ozone gas begins to interact and stabilize within the oil. As it is continually processed, the ozone slowly begins to turn the liquid form of the oil into a off-white colored paste. This paste is then used for many natural benefits.
