May’s Featured Products CANCER FACTS: According to a soon-to-be-released report from the Cancer Prevention Coalition (CPC) entitled How to Win the Losing War Against Cancer, scientists have made little real progress against this disease since Nixon's declaration of war in 1972. Indeed, we're clearly losing ground. Just how badly are we being beaten? Here are some snapshots from the new report: From 1973 to 1998, the overall incidence of cancer rates has increased by about 24%. Cancer is now an epidemic that will strike one in every two men and one in every three women over the course of their lifetimes. This increase cannot be attributed to smoking-malignant melanoma incidence is up 151% since 1973; liver cancer is up 91%; non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is up 81%; testicular cancer is up 63%; postmenopausal breast cancer is up 54%; and acute myeloid leukemia and brain cancer are up 16%. Childhood cancers have increased 20% overall in the same period. Those grim figures have come in spite of over $4 billion in annual funding for the National Cancer Institute and countless other dollars donated to other efforts by the public. Why, with all of our technological prowess, are we losing the war on cancer? According to the CPC, it's really quite simple: We're battling for cures when we should be fighting for prevention. More Facts You Need To Know About Cancer One in three people will contract cancer, and one in four will die from the disease. Within five years, cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death, according to the American Hospital Association. In 1994, 1.2 million new cancer cases were added to the more than eight million people in the U.S. who have already been diagnosed with cancer. Since 1950, the overall cancer incidence has increased by 44 percent; the incidence of breast cancer and male colon cancer by about 60 percent; testis, prostate and kidney by 100 percent; and other cancers, such as malignant melanoma, multiple myeloma and some lymphomas, by over 100 percent. The estimated annual cost of cancer to the United States, excluding incalculable psychosocial costs, is $110 billion, approximately 2 percent of the GNP. An estimated 80 million people have health insurance insufficient to cover the costs of a catastrophic illness such as cancer. Annual production rates for synthetic, carcinogenic and other industrial chemicals exploded from 1 billion pounds in 1940 to more than 500 billion pounds annually during the 1980s. Recent National Cancer Institute studies have linked: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and exposure to solvents, oils, and greases; elevated risks for multiple myelorna among men and women employed in the textile and plastic industries; lymphoma among laboratory workers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and lung cancer among workers who developed silicosis. The rates of certain types of cancer among some industrial workers are up to 10 times higher than in the general population. Children of workers handling chemical carcinogens have sharply increase cancer rates. For example, the risks of childhood leukemia are increased two-to-five-fold if, during their mother's pregnancies, their fathers worked with spray paints, dyes or pigments. Some 75 percent of all cancers develop in those over 55, but notable exceptions include childhood leukemia, testicular and brain cancers - which mainly strike young people and have been increasing at an alarming rate, particularly among peak age groups. For example, there has been an approximate 300 percent increase in testicular cancer among those aged 25-34 since the 1950s. During the 1990s, nearly 2 million women will have been diagnosed with breast cancer and 460,000 will have died. Between 1950 and 1989, the incidence of breast cancer increased by 53 percent. There has been an approximate doubling in. lung cancer rates in recent decades among non- smokers. A wide range of occupational exposures and urban air pollution have been shown to cause lung cancer. "Occupational studies have played a major role in identifying well-established environmental carcinogens, such as asbestos, benzene, arsenic, aromatic amines, coal tars, vinyl chloride, chromium, and wood dust." In the time it took you to read this fact sheet, another two Americans have died of cancer Smallpox Vaccine Knowledge Found Lacking By LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN New York Times ATLANTA, May 9 - Doctors and the public poorly understand the dangers of the smallpox vaccine and need to be better informed if vaccinations are to be reintroduced after an absence of 30 years, federal health officials and infectious disease experts said here today. Focus groups conducted for a panel of scientists advising the government uncovered a catalog of misinformation about the smallpox vaccine - the first vaccine to be developed (in 1796) and considered to be the most dangerous. Unlike most other immunizations, smallpox vaccine can harm recipients and their contacts. Resumption of vaccination on a large scale would probably lead to thousands of serious complications and hundreds of deaths, as it did when millions of Americans were routinely vaccinated. Today, the focus groups found, some doctors mistakenly believe that the disease still occurs naturally. Many doctors, particularly those under 40, know little about the vaccine's complications or how to use two-pronged needles to administer it. The doctors also expressed concerns about liability if they were to give the vaccine. Many non-physicians said they assumed that the vaccine was safe, provided lifelong protection and was still given to children. (Before 1972, many Americans were periodically revaccinated.) Many participants said they believed that exposure to the smallpox virus was always fatal; in fact, the death rate is about 30 percent. Dr. Glen Nowak, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reported the findings to the panel, known as the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices and the National Vaccine Advisory Committee. The government asked it to determine by June 20 whether to continue the policy of prohibiting vaccinations unless the disease returns in a bio-terrorism attack or to allow smallpox vaccine to be offered to everyone who wants it. "The current knowledge levels of physicians and the public likely limit understanding" of strategies intended for determining smallpox vaccine use before or after a bio-terrorist attack, Dr. Nowak said. The disease control centers and the committee plan to hold forums around the country over the next few weeks to discuss the risks and benefits of reintroducing smallpox vaccination. Current guidelines, published in June 2001, do not recommend smallpox vaccine for the public. Vaccination is limited chiefly to laboratory workers directly involved with smallpox virus or its close virological cousins. The limits were based largely on the lack of enough vaccine. At the time, the government had only 15 million doses. But in the wake of the anthrax attacks last fall, the government has expanded its stockpile of smallpox vaccine. Tests have shown that the 15 million doses can be diluted to 75 million. The drug company Aventis Pasteur has donated about 80 million doses that have been frozen since 1958 and that the government says would be used only in an emergency. The government is also buying 220 million doses made by a new laboratory technique. Delivery is expected by year's end. Dr. D. A. Henderson, who led the worldwide smallpox eradication program in the 1970's and is now an adviser to Tommy G. Thompson, secretary of health and human services, told the panel that there was no information to suggest that a smallpox attack was likely. Yet, Dr. Henderson said, "there is a tremendous demand for smallpox vaccine from every quarter," including parents and health-care and other workers who would be the first to respond in an attack. If an outbreak occurs, the disease control agency says it will respond with the technique known as ring vaccination, which was used to eradicate the disease. In the event of an attack, the agency's current policy - based on the advisory committee's recommendations last June - is to give priority for vaccination to individuals who had face-to-face contact with smallpox patients in a household, workplace or during transportation to a hospital; contacts of cases; or exposure to a deliberate release of the virus. Dr. Henderson and other speakers at the meeting cited myriad problems if smallpox vaccine were to be offered to all Americans who want it. A crucial problem is that the Food and Drug Administration has approved none of the smallpox vaccines for marketing and classifies all of them as investigational. The classification requires that each individual give consent before receiving the vaccine. Even the new generation of vaccine will require informed consent until at least late 2003, said Dr. Phil Russell, a health and human services official. The standard smallpox vaccine can cause a variety of severe, even fatal, reactions. People with AIDS and other diseases that damage the immune system are one particularly vulnerable group. Millions of individuals with skin disorders like eczema, atopic dermatitis and acne are at risk for potentially fatal complications. The panel was told that serious reactions can occur in someone who had eczema years ago, a problem complicated by the fact that many adults may not know they had it as a child. A recipient of smallpox vaccine may infect another person through transfer of the virus by hand or bathing, and the infection can be far more severe in such contacts than in the vaccine recipient. Other complications include impaired vision from infection of an eye, heart or bone; anemia; and encephalitis. The blood supply could shrink if smallpox vaccinations became widely used because donors are rejected for one year after a vaccination. Experts Call for Limiting Antibiotic Use WASHINGTON, May 09, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A group of antibiotic experts Thursday called for the government and industry to take steps to curtail the use of certain antibiotics in farm animals because the practice could have deadly consequences for humans. One of the main problems is certain antibiotics are used to promote growth in chickens, cows and other food-producing animals, which can lead to strains of bacteria resistant to the antibiotics, Stuart Levy, president of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics, told United Press International. Many of these bacteria can then infect people and cause fatal illnesses if antibiotics are no longer effective against them, added Levy, who is also director of the center for adaptation genetics and drug resistance at Tufts University School of Medicine in Medford, Mass. The increase in bacteria resistant to antibiotics has been a growing problem over the past several years. The main bacteria of concern are salmonella, campylobacter and E. coli. The World Health Organization calculates each year approximately 14,000 Americans die due to drug-resistant infections. The U.S. government is also concerned about the problem and both the FDA and the Senate are taking steps to curtail antibiotic use in farm animals. The alliance, which held a news conference to discuss the issue and also published a report in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, consists of scientists and physicians from around the world who are involved in studying antibiotic resistance. Their recommendations call for discontinuing the use of antibiotics for growth promotion purposes. "It's an out-of-date, no longer acceptable practice," Levy said, noting the European Union has banned it. Although inappropriate use of antibiotics in humans leads to the development of resistance, Levy said, "I could argue that animal use is more pervasive because of the resistant bacteria leaching into the environment." Resistant bacteria and the antibiotics are excreted from the animals and leach into soil and water, he said. Two classes of antibiotics are of major concern -- fluoroquinolones, including the anthrax drug Cipro, and cephalosporins. Drugs in these classes "may be the last resort for particular diseases" and as such "should be given extra special attention," Levy said. There may be cases where veterinarians or farmers have to use fluoroquinolones or cephalosporins but "they should not be used unless there's no other option," he said. Levy noted poultry producers Tyson and Purdue have voluntarily cut down on their use of fluoroquinolones and McDonald's and other fast food chains have stopped buying chickens from producers who use the antibiotics. "We definitely consider this a problem," Linda Tollefson, deputy director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, told UPI, noting the agency has proposed a ban on the use of fluoroquinolones in chickens. "Resistance to these antibiotics has developed and it is affecting humans," she said. However, it may take a year or longer before the ban goes into effect, Tollefson said, because it is currently being challenged by Bayer, which makes the fluoroquinolone Baytril for poultry. Baytril is the same antibiotic used in humans under the name Cipro. However, legislation to be introduced Thursday by Sens. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and Jack Reed, D-R.I., "takes immediate action to implement the decision of FDA to withdraw these drugs from our food supply," the senators said in a release. The legislation, The Preservation of Antibiotics for Human Treatment Act, will also "protect the health of Americans by phasing out the non-therapeutic use in livestock of medically important antibiotics, unless their manufacturers can show that they pose no danger to the public health." The senators noted the act would "not restrict use of antibiotics to treat sick animals or to treat pets and other animals not used for food." Other antibiotics the FDA is concerned about include virginiamycin, an antibiotic used to treat a type of bacterial infection called vancomycin-resistant enterococci, which can be fatal in humans, Tollefson said. In animals, virginiamycin is used for growth promotion. Other growth-promoting antibiotics that can lead to bacterial resistance include penicillin, tetracycline, streptomycin and erythromycin, all of which are commonly used to treat infections in humans. COMMENT: This article confirms what alternative doctors/practitioners have known for years and have been trying to get the government and the public to listen. Obviously it takes "experts" (whatever that means) to convince them. I can't help but wonder "why" they are coming out with this acknowledgement "now." Believe me, there is probably an underlying reason. Notice the mention of Tyson... a friend of ours sells industrial soap to them and literally gets sick every time he has to make a sales call to the plant. Also, McDonald's will allow their name mentioned now that they have "stopped" using antibiotic chicken...let's see, how long has McDonald's been in business?...and they are just now deciding to stop this practice... are they trying to make us think they actually CARE about our health? What a business plan! 20% Of New Drugs Later Found To Have Serious Adverse Effects The May 1, 2002 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association reported the results of a study that sought to determine the frequency of previously unrecognized adverse drug reactions occurring in recently approved drugs. By analyzing volumes of the Physician's Desk Reference published over a twenty-five year period as well as other information, researchers at Harvard University discovered that half of the newly established adverse effects, which include liver, bone marrow and heart damage as well as pregnancy risks, are found within seven years of their approval, and half of the drugs withdrawn were taken off the market within two years following their release. Study author and primary care physician and researcher at Cambridge Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Dr Karen Lasser, stated, "This study will change the way I talk to patients about the use of new drugs. If there were a safer, effective drug that has been in use for a number of years, I would strongly recommend it over a newer drug whose safety profile is unknown. I would prescribe a new drug only when absolutely necessary, and then watch for adverse effects very, very closely." COMMENT: The following story is a prime example of how far our medical community will go with vaccinations and how much control they "think" they have over our lives. LL DOCTOR TURNS BABY WILLIAM OVER to CPS From: Vision Forum This month the unfolding story of baby William Goforth once again took some remarkable twists and turns as statism and religious bigotry were juxtaposed against the ever-merciful faithfulness of the Lord in protecting the life of this miracle preemie. The supervising hospital physician who once recommended discontinuance of life support for baby Will Goforth on the grounds that the quality of his life would be minimal, this month declared that he was "acting in the best interest of the child," when he authorized hospital social workers to file a formal request for state intervention with Child Protective Services after parents Joshua and Noelle Goforth refused his demand to vaccinate the four-pound preemie. Appealing to the physician to respect their parental obligation to make decisions for their own child, parents Josh and Noelle explained that though they did not necessarily object to vaccination at some time in the life of William, they did not believe that it was either wise or necessary struggling preemie currently fighting for his life. After consulting with legal counsel, they further appealed to the supervising physician by explaining that Texas law, and even CPS guidelines, makes it clear that their decision not to vaccinate was legal. Indicating that his authority as a physician trumps their rights as a parent, the supervising doctor remained steadfast in his assault on the parents, and later responded by cursing at the Goforths' attorney when he called to mediate the situation. Seeing that the Goforths would not cede their parental rights to his personal opinions, the physician gathered a group including two hospital social workers for a surprise meeting with father Josh Goforth, during which time it was made clear that unless the Goforths agreed to a series of demands, they would continue to work for the State to take custody of the child away from the parents. Among the issues raised as a pretext for State seizure of the child was the fact that the social workers did not believe that the Goforths were economically capable of caring for baby William after he leaves the hospital. This last comment was based purely on the fact that the Goforths have declined to receive State welfare. When CPS did intervene and interview the Goforths, it was revealed that the actual charges brought against the family which served as the pretext for removing the child from the home included accusations that they were part of a "cult-like" religion, that they held to "patriarchal" values in which the husband speaks for the wife, and that they declined vaccination. "Even in the midst of a storm, a rainbow will soon appear." MUCH GOOD NEWS Thanks be to God, we can report that the social worker assigned to the case communicated to the Goforths and their attorney that charges brought by the hospital staff did not constitute a valid basis for CPS intervention. Although the case remains open, and hospital social workers appear resolute in their commitment to oppose the family, which could result in later interviews and possible intervention, the circumstances appear favorable for baby William and his parents. Thanks can also be given for the fact that an appeal by the Goforths was honored to have the antagonistic hospital physician removed from any jurisdiction over Baby William. The new supervising physician appears not only to be highly competent, but favorable to working with the parents through these difficult times. Perhaps the greatest news is the revelation that continued improvement on the part of Baby William means that an eye operation scheduled for this week may be deemed unnecessary. It has been indefinitely postponed as physicians continue to chart the progress of baby William. DIOXIN REPORT Robert Cohen "The primary source of dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and coplanar PCBs for the general population is food, especially meat, fish, and dairy products." Chemosphere, 1998 Oct, 37:9 There is a Diox-Sin problem in America. The sin is one of omission. The United States Department of Environmental Protection (EPA) has continuously delayed the release of a dioxin report for the past 18 months. That report, when (and if) released in its entirety, would reveal the critical level of contamination that dioxins have reached in America's dairy products. EPA tested Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream and found the delicious taste treat to contain 1,200 times the safe level of dioxins. This week, EPA will release a new pollution data emission tracking study which includes the agency's toxic release inventory. This inventory tracks emissions of more than 600 toxic compounds by U.S. industrial facilities into the air, water and land. Dioxin has been identified as the toxic compounds in chemicals such as Agent Orange. Dioxins are what turned the entire community of Love Canal (near Buffalo, New York), into death canal. Dioxins have been blamed for birth defects and cancers. The higher up one goes on the food chain, the more concentrated are dangerous chemicals in the flesh and body fluids of animals. Humans sit atop the food chain. Infant’s breastfeeding from mothers who eat dairy products sit higher up on the food chain than their pollution-eating moms. We, as a society, drink bovine body fluids in the name of good health. These body fluids are concentrated into cheese and ice cream, which contain unsafe levels of dioxins. These products are unfit for human consumption. EPA has found that dioxin levels in fish can be found at more than 100,000 times that of the water in which they swim. Yet, many government agencies promote the consumption of fish for the Omega-3 oils, which they contain. FDA is considering a new ordinance in which dioxin-rich fish oil will be permitted as an additive to milk and dairy products. Will EPA hold back some of their analytical data when they release this week's report? The meat and dairy industries have spent the past 18 months lobbying federal agencies to delay the release of EPA's data. In this case, censorship of truth only helps one group of people. Those who manufacture poison for human consumption. By not releasing their critically important report in a timely manner, EPA has applied a new definition to the Golden Rule: He, who has the gold, makes the rules. For the sake of our children, our families, our friends and loved ones, I hope that EPA holds nothing back and releases all of the truth about the concentrations of dioxins in milk and dairy products. In January of 1998 (volume 76), the Journal of Animal Science reported: "The majority of toxic dioxin is and (or) has been derived from industrial chlorination processes, incineration of municipal waste, and production of certain herbicides. The lipophilic nature of dioxins results in higher concentrations in the fat of animal and fish products, and their excretion via milk secretion in dairy cattle may result in relatively high concentrations of dioxin contamination in high-fat dairy products."
