Spring is
just around the corner! Only a few days away. Not
sure how it feels where you are, but here in Texas everything
is beginning to bloom and sprout new growth. It is nice
to be able to open up the windows to air out the house and
do some Spring-cleaning.
Our bodies need Spring-cleaning too! There are a lot of things that
go into our bodies that are not intended to be there. Toxic air, water,
foods with chemicals and colorings, and even prescription and over-the-counter
medications. The liver has a heavy load to bear. Constipation
is a common problem and belching, bloating and gas visit most people after
meal times.
Nature offers a lot of options to clean out the body. Generations before
us included traditions of taking Spring tonics and castor oil to clean out
the body. My parents talk about having to take caster oil and many
other remedies to clean out the body, both Spring and Fall. And you certainly
didn’t dare to say you were constipated around my Grandmother!
Over-toxicity leads to many different types of health problems. We are devoting
most of this issue to articles concerning the cleansing the body (digestive
track and liver/gallbladder), the home and then further getting the body
healthy by losing weight and exercising.
There is no better time than the Spring
to start fresh. This jam-packed issue of Alternative
Health & Healing will provide the first step,
which is Education. So as you begin to notice the new beginnings
taking place in nature, consider starting a new beginning to
your health. You CAN do it!!

The
Only Effective Way To Cleanse
The
Whole Digestive Track: Oxy-Powder
By: Dr. Edward
F. Group
When
addressing any health program you must first start by cleansing
or detoxifying the body to prepare it for the transition from
dis-ease to health. Basic health begins in the liver and
digestive tract. The most powerful and fastest way to clean
the digestive tract is through an oxidation/reduction process.
As we age we accumulate toxic substances in our digestive
tract due to poor digestion. Poor digestion is a result of
too much cooked food, lack of enzymes, and from making poor
food combination choices.
The
pancreas is an organ, which produces the necessary enzymes
to break down the cooked food we eat. At birth, our pancreas
has a limited supply of enzymes. We only have enough enzymes
to breakdown 1 cooked meal a day for 120 years. The Standard
American Diet (SAD) of three cooked meals per day causes us
to run low of enzymes by age 20-40, which is when many begin
to notice a rapid decline in health.
To maintain health we need a
steady diet that is 80% raw fruits and vegetables (combined
properly). Raw fruits and vegetables provide natural enzymes,
water, oxygen, fiber, vitamins and minerals for digestion. These
natural enzymes are destroyed when food is cooked. Eating
cooked food depletes our enzymes. Eating raw foods and learning
to combine foods properly are both essential for optimal health
benefits. With the poor diet we have in the United States,
people are eating 2-4 cooked meals daily, which the body cannot
utilize. Anything that is cooked, processed, micro-waved,
pasteurized, homogenized, boxed, or canned is dead and is
a toxin to the body, with very little if any nutrient value.
It is very difficult for a weak
body to break down and digest protein, fats and carbohydrates. This
is why you constantly have undigested food particles in the
intestinal tract. If you were to take a hamburger and French
fries, put them in a zip lock bag and let them sit in the
98.6-degree (body temp.) sunlight for 3 days and then open
the bag you would find putrefied protein, rancid fats and
fermented carbohydrates. This is exactly what happens in our
digestive tract and why it becomes compacted.
The average 40-year-old has
between 10-20 pounds of hard compacted fecal matter lodged
on the lining of the intestinal tract. The intestinal tract is 30-35
feet in length and if cut open
and spread out, the surface area is the size of a tennis court. In
order to clean the digestive tract, the solid compaction must
be turned into a liquid or gas and expelled. This is what
the Oxy-Powder will help you achieve.
Oxy-Powder can safely and effectively melt away (oxidize) the
compaction from the small intestine, large intestine, and
colon. This is important because a clean intestinal tract
is necessary for optimal health. While taking Oxy-Powder you
will experience watery/gaseous stools. This is not diarrhea;
this is the by-product of oxidation. Remember we are turning
a solid into a liquid or gas. It is advised to drink plenty
of distilled water with organic apple cider vinegar daily,
while taking the Oxy-Powder to
add vital minerals into the body. There has never been a documented
case of dehydration or electrolyte imbalances from taking
this product.
Oxy-Powder is also harmless to the good bacteria in the intestinal
tract. When the intestinal tract is fully cleansed, your stools
will become semi-solid again. After that has happened, stay
with a maintenance dose. The oxygen will now be absorbed
directly into the bloodstream, which is a good thing! Guess
what? Everyone on this
planet is oxygen deficient. The amount of available oxygen
in the air is declining at a rapid rate. We have only four
sources of oxygen today. Our first source is marine plankton
(algae) that supplies 70% of the Earth’s oxygen and is being
destroyed by oil spills and the dumping of toxic chemicals
in our oceans. Our second source is trees and vegetation that
are being destroyed and cut down to make room for our growing
population.
Our third natural oxygen source
is fruits and vegetables that are now being genetically engineered
and are full of pesticides and insecticides. Our fourth source
of oxygen is through lightening which produces ozone, but
our sky is filled with fossil fuels, hydrocarbons, fluorocarbons,
and millions of other toxic chemicals. Our first two sources
are rapidly being depleted and our second two sources are
so toxic that the benefits basically cancel each other out.
This leaves all of us oxygen deficient. By taking Oxy-Powder on
a regular basis, you keep your intestinal tract clean, and
provide your body with much needed healing oxygen.

Cleansing
The Liver/Gallbladder
This is crucial
for everyone. Your liver is one of the most vital organs you
possess. If it is damaged, your body cannot function properly.
Without it, you cannot survive. An unhealthy liver is the
root of many physical problems.
When you undergo
any kind of chemical treatment, the liver is affected. This
holds true whether you are taking prescription antibiotics,
or herbal or synthetic hormone treatments, or any treatment
for any ailment. Everything that you ingest passes through
the liver in some form, via the blood stream. Many of these
substances end up stored in the liver, as the body does not
know how to rid itself of many of the unnatural toxins we
ingest daily, from chemicals to preservatives to additives.
When the liver becomes overloaded, it develops problems that
can lead from mild to dangerous to fatal. Even a mildly sluggish
liver can seriously affect our energy levels, and our libidos!
Always remember that the liver is responsible for the hormone
levels in our bodies. If the liver is impaired in any way,
your hormone levels are affected, as is the liver's ability
to process incoming hormones from feminizing therapies.
Once the buildup
becomes too much, the liver begins to have trouble eliminating
wastes from the body, as well as trouble digesting our food.
This then leads to a buildup of toxins in other organs, and
in all the tissues of the body, including the brain. A buildup
of this nature can be fatal, if the liver doesn't first cease
to function altogether. So it is our job to eliminate these
toxins from the body on a regular basis. It is also our job
to feed the liver the nutrients it needs to support its important
functions and aid it in regeneration, as well as to occasionally
give it a complete break from all we put it through in a day.
If you are
a drinker, a recreational drug user, a long-time prescription
drug user, or suffer from chronic illness, or eat a toxic
diet, I would highly suggest undergoing a full liver cleanse
cycle prior to beginning any program to improve your health.
Your liver needs to be nourished and ready to tackle the job
you have for it to perform. This cleanse also cleans out other
vital organs, your blood, your intestines, so it is a vital
cleanse for your overall health.
Cleanliness
is next to Godliness:
The first step to
a healthy liver (and body!) is diet. There is no substitute for eating
properly and obtaining as much of your daily nutritional needs from
whole foods and hi-tech supplementation. You should be eating a diet
high in fiber, low in saturated fat, and low in refined sugars. Eat
foods every day that are high in vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and
selenium. These nutrients protect the liver and other organs from
free radical damage. You should avoid processed foods (such as lunchmeats,
junk foods, etc.), soft drinks, fried foods, salty foods, and white
sugar (and especially sugar substitutes!). Try using a healing honey
or stevia as a nutritious replacement to sugars. Limit your caffeine
intake, or stop using it altogether (caffeine can cause breast tenderness
and pain). Limit red meats, and add fish to your diet at least twice
per week. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly
dark leafy greens, whole grains, and legumes.

and Liver/Gallbladder Flush is addressed in our 7 Step Ultimate
Health Program. For more information go to: http://www.ghchealth.com/ghc/details.asp?ItemID=1

American Cancer Society Now Believes Obesity is as Dangerous as Smoking
The risk of
cancer from being obese is similar to the risk of cancer from
using tobacco, according to the American Cancer Society, and
experts suggest that obesity may soon surpass smoking as the
leading cause of preventable deaths.
Being overweight
or obese is associated with a higher risk of several types
of cancer, including colon and breast cancer, and evidence
suggests that being physically active can reduce cancer risks,
especially for colon and breast cancer.
One-third
of cancer deaths are related to diet and inactivity, and experts
believe that about 186,000 lives could be saved each year
if people made lifestyle changes.
To spur such
changes, the society will launch the Great American Weigh
In, similar to the Great American Smokeout, which began about
three decades ago and encouraged people to quit smoking.
The Weigh
In aims to establish a link between fat and cancer in the
minds of the public, as a recent survey found that only one
percent of participants knew that maintaining a healthy weight
would also keep cancer risk down.
The program
asks people to gauge whether they are overweight or obese
by measuring their body mass index (BMI), a measurement of
obesity involving height and weight.
Women will
be a primary target for the society since they typically make
decisions on what to feed the family and are also more likely
than men to make lifestyle changes. The link between weight
and breast cancer, which is the most feared disease among
women, will also be a major motivator for women to maintain
healthy weights, according to the society.
The Weigh
In’s simplistic goal, measuring BMI, may trigger people to
take other healthy steps. However, the program’s simple goal
has been criticized by some who say a next step, such as a
30-minute walk each day, should be suggested. Other strategies
include using law, as is the case with smoking (for example
people cannot smoke inside many buildings). One suggestion
for food would be to reduce prices of healthier food and raise
taxes on higher fat ones.

Can't Sleep? Warm Your Feet
Warm feet -- a sign of healthy blood flow -- may
help induce restful sleep. So warming up cold feet, such as
with an old-fashioned hot water bottle, could help those who
have trouble falling asleep.
Thermoregulation -- the body's heat distribution
system -- is strongly linked to sleep cycles. Even lying down
increases sleepiness by redistributing heat in the body from
the core to the periphery.
Blood flow is a prime method of distributing heat
evenly throughout the body. Poor blood flow can cause a reduction
in the temperature of the extremities, and the researchers
theorized that cold hands and feet might therefore be associated
with sleeplessness as well. They authors found that increases
in blood flow of in the hands and feet, rather than diet,
light or melatonin administration, was the best predictor
of the body's readiness for sleep.
Based on these findings, the authors speculate
that any act that increases temperature in the extremities
-- such as placing a hot water bottle at the feet, or covering
the feet with socks, could help induce sleep more quickly.
EAT
WELL, MOVE WELL, LIVE WELL
By Pam Smith
Good nutrition
is vital to your health, and is even more effective when coupled
with regular physical activity. To get at least 30 minutes
of physical activity in each day, it's not necessary to have
a health club
membership or the perfect outfit. What is necessary is that you move your
body more often than just reaching for the remote or surfing the net.
Here are some examples of moderate activity. Choose a few this week.
Washing and waxing car 45-60 minutes; Raking leaves 30 minutes; Washing windows
or floors 15- 60 minutes; Walking two miles 30 minutes; Gardening 30-45 minutes;
Pushing a stroller 30 minutes; Stair-walking 15 minutes; Playing volleyball
45 minutes; Water aerobics 30 minutes;
Playing touch football 30-45 minutes; Swimming 20 minutes; Playing basketball
30 minutes;
Jumping rope 15 minutes; Bicycling five miles 30 minutes; Running two miles
20-30 minutes;
Dancing (fast) 30 minutes
A physically active lifestyle offers many rewards -- from heart health to
strong bones to stress relief. And it works!
Study after study shows that people who follow healthful eating plans and
stay physically active are more successful at losing -- and keeping off --
extra pounds of body fat. In fact, physical activity along with a healthful
eating plan appears to be the key to maintaining a healthy weight, according
to research.
How can physical activity help you manage your weight and enhance
your body image?
* Physical activity burns energy. The longer, more frequently and more vigorously
you exercise, the more calories you burn. When you burn more than you consume,
your body uses its energy stores and you lose weight.
* Physical activity helps you keep muscle and lose body fat. Without exercise
on a weight-loss diet, you lose lean body tissue along with body fat.
* Physically active people have more lean body mass. Even when you're not
moving, lean body mass requires more energy to maintain than fat tissue.
So at the same weight, you may be able to consume slightly more calories
without gaining weight than someone with more body fat.
* Physical activity speeds up your metabolism for up to 12 hours, even after
you stop. You'll burn more energy even at rest.
* Physical activity can help relieve stress.
* Many people who become more physically active opt for foods with less fat,
fewer calories and more complex carbohydrates.
For weight control, you don't need to be an exercise fanatic with strenuous
daily workouts to get the benefits. That's OK, because moderate, consistent
physical activity can do the job. In fact, any activity you enjoy and stay
with can be the right one for you. If you make exercise enjoyable, you're
more likely to stick with it.

Little Sleep Impairs Mind as Much as No Sleep
By Dana Frisch
NEW YORK (Reuters
Health) - Many nights of little sleep--fewer than six hours
a night--can impair mental performance as much as not getting
a wink for two nights in a row, new research shows.
The data contradict
a popular notion that our bodies can become accustomed to
functioning on sustained periods of little sleep without any
consequences, said lead author Dr. Hans P.A. Van Dongen, a
research assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania
School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
The 48 participants
in the study were divided into four groups that slept either
four, six or eight hours a night for two weeks, or had no
sleep for three days. The groups were monitored in a laboratory
throughout the two weeks to ensure that they did not nod off
or use caffeine. They were assessed on a battery of mental
and physiological tests periodically every day and were also
asked to evaluate how tired they felt.
People sleeping
less than eight hours a night were slower to react, less able
to think clearly and perform simple memory tasks, the researchers
report in the March issue of the journal Sleep. They also
performed as poorly on certain tasks as the individuals evaluated
after one or two nights of sleeplessness.
However, getting
some sleep made individuals feel less tired than those who
went without sleep despite test results that showed they were
just as impaired.
As a consequence,
Van Dongen told Reuters Health, there should be countermeasures
in place for people who cannot avoid being chronically sleep-deprived,
such as military personnel, trainee doctors, shift workers
and others.
Van Dongen
recommends that these professions limit the number of hours
people are allowed to work, give people the opportunity to
nap at "strategic times" or allow them to use caffeine
or other chemical stimulants to maintain alertness.
This study
is important and "relevant" because it shows what
happens when the body alone must deal with its tiredness in
the absence of chemical stimulants like caffeine or other
distractions, said Dr. Meir Kryger, a professor of medicine
at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, and a sleep
researcher.
Data from
the National Sleep Foundation show that Americans sleep an
average seven hours a night during the week, although 31 percent
of all adults regularly get less sleep.
The study
also found that that there were large individual differences
in how much people needed to sleep.
Kryger said
in an interview that everybody needs a different amount of
sleep. Getting sufficient amounts of shut-eye is a "life-style
decision," he said. "It is one of the important
functions of life and you need to control it."

Most of us have a hard time letting go of anger. The longer we hold
onto it, the stronger it gets. Some people direct their
anger outward at others, and some people turn their anger
inward toward themselves. Both choices lead only to pain
and suffering. Letting go of anger is hard because you
must do two things: you must take sole responsibility
for having nurtured it, and you must then make a conscious
decision not to continue carrying it. You must face the
hurt and the sorrow that lies underneath it.
The Air You Breathe
"Sick Building Syndrome" and
Building-Related Illness
By Toni Meixner
Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). Building Related
Illness (BRI). These are terms that have recently made it
to the forefront of environmental issues, usually as they
relate to the workplace. The ambient air in the workplace
and on airplanes has been studied and regulated. Current funding
has been appropriated to further research the Indoor Air Quality
(IAQ) of public places. But the question has to be asked, "Can
poor IAQ affect your home environment?" The answer is
a resounding, "YES!"
Energy problems, first encountered in the early
1970s, necessitated a re-evaluation of construction practices
and materials. The effort to reduce dependency on foreign
oil resulted in more energy efficient building practices.
Unfortunately, the new buildings were no longer able to "breathe." As
the re-circulation of the inside air increased, so did the
ever-growing list of contaminants. Gradually the air has become
a breeding ground for a number of maladies resulting in Sick
Building Syndrome. SBS occurs when building occupants experience
acute health and comfort effects that are apparently related
to the time they spend in the building, but in which no specific
illness or cause can be identified.
Symptoms associated with SBS include: headaches,
nausea, dizziness, respiratory problems, coughing, wheezing
and eye, nose or throat irritations, just to name a few. According
to David Levine of Scientific Control, Inc.,"I am called
in to test the air in a home when clients have been to their
doctor ten times and still can't find out why they feel so
poorly. Often, they'll say they feel better at work than they
do at home." "Sometimes," said Ernest Michaelson
of ECM Environmental Consultants, "a person may even
feel better in one part of a house than they do in another."
Building Related Illness, a more serious condition,
is brought on by exposure to the building air where symptoms
of diagnosable illness are identified (e.g. certain allergies
or infections) and can be directly attributed to environmental
agents in the air. BRIs account for a 69 percent increase
in requests for investigation by the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health over the last fifteen years.
Basically, the sources for SBS and BRI break down
into two major categories contributing to IAQ problems: Heating,
Air Conditioning and Ventilation (HVAC) Systems, and contaminants.
The HVAC system controls the circulation of air throughout
the building, the introduction of fresh air into the mix,
and the filtration of airborne particles. Poorly ventilated
or seldom cleaned, these systems can pump contaminants through
the house again and again.
The list of contaminants is long and getting longer.
The number one concern on the part of homeowners today is
a naturally occurring gas called radon. (Radon is currently
the second leading cause of lung cancer in this country).
Residuals from a burning process that find leaking chimneys
or gas furnaces can cause an increase in the carbon monoxide
levels. Off-gases from the formaldehyde base in new carpet
padding or fumes from synthetic fibers can also be irritants.
Business machine off-gases and tobacco smoke add to the problem.
Biological contaminants such as mildew, mold, dust mites,
bacteria and pollens rank high as potential culprits. Jim
Flannery of Consolidated Safety Services reports, "People
don't realize that strep and staph infections can grow in
their duct work." Other pollutants are hazardous airborne
particulates, such as asbestos and dust from oxidizing lead
paint. This list just scratches the surface of the possibilities.
There are many strategies a homeowner can employ
to diagnose and remedy the IAQ problems within his or her
own environment. Questions about IAQ can be answered by an
inspection of the premises, generally over a twenty-four hour
period. This inspection results in a report designating the
trouble spots. No single test, however, can identify all of
the components of ambient air. Testing usually includes: temperature,
relative humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, radon,
volatile organic air contaminants, fresh air supply and exchange
and air velocity. Occasionally, more detailed laboratory testing
might be necessary to clearly identify a contaminant. Upon
conclusion of the evaluation of the test results, an extensive
report including the findings and where they fall on the acceptable
standards scale will identify problem areas. Recommendations
for mitigation should also be included in the report. David
Levine assures that, "This testing is relatively inexpensive."
Some remedies may be as simple as keeping lids
tightly secured on paint and solvent cans or changing the
filters on an air handling system. David Levine suggests regular
cleaning of the ductwork, especially if the home is older
or there has been new construction in the area. Jim Flannery
recommends a constant airflow in the case of new carpet, draperies
or furniture. Ernest Michaelson says, "Off-gases from
new carpet will often dissipate over a 3 to 12 month period." The
best precaution against irritation is a proper balance of
airflow. Keeping the humidity regulated is also effective.
Oneil M. Banks, PhD, a Certified Industrial Hygienist with
Scientific Control, confirms, "Molds can not grow when
the humidity is maintained between 30 and 50 percent."
Many other remedies exist; however, those methods
may be more complicated or costly. As an example, a ventilation
system may be needed to mitigate rate. At this time the Maryland
Department of Environment encourages builders to use "safer
substitutes" during the design, construction and remodeling
of homes in an effort to prevent future problems. Sick Building
Syndrome and Building Related Illness are the environmental
buzzwords of the Ô90s. For a chemically-sensitive segment
of the society, these words can hold the possible explanation
for chronic discomfort that has been plaguing them. Since
Americans spend an average of 90 percent of their time indoors,
be it home, workplace or entertainment spot, perhaps even
the less chemically-sensitive are affected. Health care reform
will continue to heighten interest in this important environmental
issue. Meanwhile, local environmental agencies can supply
information regarding "the air you breathe."

Study: Beds in US Homes Are Hoppin' with Dust Mites
By Charnicia E. Huggins
NEW YORK (Reuters
Health) - More than 80 percent of homes in America have detectable
levels of house dust mite, the microscopic critter that triggers
dust allergies, a team of Massachusetts and Washington, DC,
researchers report in the first national study on the topic.
Studies have
shown that people who are allergic to dust mites may be at
risk of developing asthma, a condition that has been on the
rise in the US since 1980.
Yet despite
the association between house dust mite exposure and an increased
allergy and asthma risk, no nationwide estimate of house dust
mite levels has been reported until now.
"Our
study indicates that most people in the US can assume that
they have some exposure to dust mite allergen in their homes," Dr.
Samuel J. Arbes Jr. at the National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina,
told Reuters Health.
Based on data
from the National Survey of Lead and Allergens in Housing,
which included 831 randomly selected households, Arbes and
his colleagues found that 84 percent of US homes had detectable
levels of dust mite allergen in a bed.
Dust mite
levels in nearly half of the homes were at least 2 micrograms
per gram, the threshold at which people can become allergic.
In almost one quarter of the homes dust mite levels were five
times as high, reaching the threshold associated with asthma
development, the report indicates.
Older homes,
homes in the Northeast and homes with high bedroom humidity
were most likely to have high concentrations of dust mite
allergen, as were homes with musty or mildew odors.
These conditions
all directly or indirectly allow dust mites to thrive, according
to the report.
Older homes
may generally be dustier than newer homes, providing more
food for dust mites that feed on the constituents of dust,
including bacteria, pollen and human skin scales. Homes in
the Northeast and other non-western regions are, in general,
more humid than homes in the West, which had the lowest concentration
of dust mites. Further, because dust mites absorb moisture
from the air, they proliferate in homes that reek of musty
odors and mildew, smells that are indicative of moisture-rich
environments.
"We believe
that avoidance of dust mite allergen may prevent the development
of allergy and improve symptoms in people who already suffer
from allergy and asthma," Arbes said.
To lower the
levels of dust mite allergen, Arbes and his team advise that
people use impermeable mattress covers, wash bedding every
week in hot water and remove all non-washable items from the
bed, including stuffed animals. (Using high-quality Essential
Oils in the rinse cycle will greatly benefit in the killing
of dust mites.)
Arbes added
that although dust mite levels can vary over time and by season,
the homes included in the current study were surveyed only
once. He said, however, that "the study design used was
the most efficient design for estimating allergen concentrations
across the nation."
The study
was conducted by researchers at the National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences and the US Department of Housing
and Urban Development.

Nature’s #1 Air
Filtering System—The Clean Air Plants
By: Valerie Cooksley
There is a solution for indoor air pollution
and poor air quality. Not only do plants produce life-sustaining
oxygen, they are living air filters, taking in “dirty” air and
consuming or digesting the multitude of chemical pollutants
that can cause various health problems and even cancers. They
help clean the air, making it safer for us to breathe.
Currently, there are a number
of biochemists and other scientists who are studying correlations
between certain plant species and the toxins they are capable
of digesting, making a specialized list of toxin-specific
plant categories. For example, Boston Ferns digest formaldehyde,
while English Ivy seems to be especially effective in consuming
benzene. A few of the NASA plant experiments in the 1980’s
involved placing plants in highly polluted enclosed rooms
containing chemical toxins. Within a 24-hour period many
of the toxins had been digested by the plants and previous
toxin levels were greatly reduced.
The Clean Air Plants:
Some plants, such as the following
are especially good for filtering air pollution and cleaning
the air. Keep plants clean and dusted, as this increases
their effectiveness. Excellent air-filtering plants include: Areca
Palm, Arrowhead Vine, Boston Fern, Chrysanthemums, Dwarf Date
Palm, English Ivy, Golden Pothos, Peace Lily, Spider Plant
and Striped Dracaenea.
Essential Oils: Natural
Bacteria and Germ Killers
By: Valerie Cooksley
Essential oils have the potential to kill
germs (germicidal), destroy bacteria (bactericidal), and eliminate
offensive odors due to their antiseptic qualities. They do
not merely cover up or mask bad odors, but actually alter the
physical and chemical molecular structure. Numerous studies
have established the efficacy of essential oils in disinfecting
room air. Dr. Jean Valnet demonstrated the bactericidal properties
of Eucalyptus essential oil. A 2% dilution in spray form killed
70% of the airborne staphylococcal bacteria.
Some essential oils shown to
have high antiseptic and antibacterial properties include
the following: Bergamot, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Juniper,
Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Orange, Peppermint, Petigrain,
Pine, Rosemary, Sandlewood and Tea Tree. In Australia, Tea
Tree is commonly used in ventilation systems to control bacteria
and mold growth.
Essential oils known to have
an antifungal effect include: Roman Chamomile, Fennel, Geranium,
Lavender and Tea Tree.
For General Antiseptic Use: Lavender-5
parts; Eucalptus-3 parts; Pine-3 parts. One part can equal

Safe (and kid safe) Products to clean your home:
Five basic
nontoxic ingredients that can be used as cleansing agents:
These ingredients,
supplemented with vegetable-oil- based soaps, lemon juice,
herbs or toothpaste, can be mixed together and used to bring
a natural, economical and safe shine to your home.
- baking soda
- washing soda
- borax
- salt
- white vinegar
Here are some of the compounds you can make:
- Disinfectant:
- Mix 1/2 cup borax (a natural
mineral that kills mold and bacteria) with 1 gallon hot
water.
- Add a few sprigs of fresh
thyme.
- Steep for 10 minutes, strain
and cool.
- Store in a recycled plastic
spray bottle.
- Floor
cleaner:
- Mix 1 cup white vinegar
with 2 gallons hot water.
- For greasy floors, add
1/4 cup washing soda and 1 tablespoon vegetable-oil-based
soap to the above mixture.
- Window-washing
fluid:
- Mix 1 cup vinegar with
4 cups hot water.
- Oven
cleaner:
- Make a paste of baking
soda and hot water.
- Sponge onto stains and
wipe clean.
- Copper-pan
cleaner:
- Sprinkle surface of pans
with coarse salt.
- Rub salt into stains with
the cut half of a fresh lemon.
- Wood
furniture cleaner:
- To remove water stains
on wood furniture, dab white toothpaste onto the stain.
- Allow the paste to dry
and then gently buff off with a soft cloth.
- Removing
mildew
- To remove mildew from bathtubs,
bathroom curtains and tile, make a mixture of:
- one-half cup vinegar
- one-half cup of Borax
cleaning detergent
- 2 cups of water.
- Pour it on the dirty areas
and let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrub with
a cloth. If mildew is still visible, use the mixture twice.
- To clean the toilet bowl,
combine equal parts of baking soda, Borax cleaning detergent
and white vinegar. Pour generously around the bowl and
scrub with a brush. Or leave it over night if badly stained.
- Removing
crayon, pencil or ink from walls
- To remove crayon, pencil
or ink marks from the walls (without removing paint),
take about 2 tablespoons of baking soda and mix in water.
- Dip a white wash rag in
the solution and rub the marks away. Wipe away excess
baking soda with the same cloth.
- Furniture
Polish
- Make your own furniture
polish by combining one tablespoon of lemon juice or white
vinegar with one- half cup of olive or vegetable oil.
Take a soft cloth and polish.
- Removing
crayon, pencil or ink from upholstery
- To remove pencil, crayon
or ink marks from upholstery, use dry baking soda. Use
a hairbrush or similar brush to rub baking soda and remove
the marks.
- Blood
stains
- To remove bloodstains,
combine one quart of Borax cleaning detergent with two
cups of cold water. Rinse stained clothing item in cold
water, and scrub in warm water with your hands. Then dip
in solution and wash by hand.
- Coffee
and chocolate stains
- To remove coffee and chocolate
stains, mix one teaspoon of white vinegar in one quart
of cold water. Sponge on stain and wipe clean.
- Other
hints
- Ironing
Clothes
To get crisp results when
ironing clothes, combine 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch
in one pint of water. Pour into a spray bottle, shake
and spray clothes before ironing.
- Bug
Control
- To keep bugs out of flour,
pasta, rice, pancake mix and other wheat products, put
2 to 3 bay leaves in the containers.
- Rather than pesticides,
you might foil roaches by placing bay leaves around
cracks in the room and leaving out dishes of equal parts
baking soda and powdered sugar. The last resort is a
mix of powered sugar and boric acid (a poison). For
other pests, a soapy water spray can be an insecticide,
and a shallow pan filled with stale beer will kill snails
and slugs.
- To protect the family
pet, alternatives to toxic flea collars include eucalyptus
ointment, herbal baths and a pinch of brewer's yeast
or Vitamin B with dinner.
- Removing
Grease
To remove grease or hair
from the drain, use equal parts of vinegar, salt and baking
soda. Pour mixture down the drain and let stand for 15
minutes. Then pour boiling water down the drain.
Drug-resistant Germs Showing Rapid
Growth
Researchers blame antibiotic
overuse

Drug-resistant germs are on the rise in the United
States and experts predict a sharp jump in the strains of
a dangerous form of strep that can overcome two common antibiotics.
By summer 2004, as many as 40 percent of the strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae
could be resistant to penicillin and erythromycin, researchers warn. That
form of strep causes thousands of cases of meningitis, sinusitis, ear infections
and pneumonia every year.
Researchers based at the Harvard School of Public Health studied reports
from sites in eight states, measuring how common the drug resistance was
in 1996 and how it increased by 1999.
Penicillin resistance rose from 21.7 percent of strep strains in 1996 to
26.6 percent in 1999, and for erythromycin it increased from 10.8 percent
to 20.2 percent, the team reports in a paper appearing in today's online
edition of the journal Nature Medicine.
The report provides further support for arguments against unnecessary antibiotic
use, said Marc Lipsitch, one of the researchers.
For years, public health experts have warned that overuse of antibiotics,
often when they are not needed, is leading to more and more drug-resistant
bacteria.
Just last month the Food and Drug Administration announced plans to require
a new warning on antibiotics, pointing out that overusing them makes them
less effective.
The government estimates that half of the 100 million antibiotic prescriptions
written each year are unnecessary.
The new research "puts it on the doctor's plate," said Dr. Donald
Low of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. "Can we change the future? Yes,
there are things we can do, but can we do them quickly enough?"
Doctors
need to make the decision to use antibiotics the right way,
in the proper dose, he said, and to encourage vaccination, which
reduces illness and thus the need for antibiotics. (More
propaganda in programming the American public to believe that
vaccinations are the “answer” for all disease. While it is
good that we are finally realizing the problem with the over-use
of antibiotics, injecting more toxic substances into the body
is NOT the answer! Where is the logic in this? L)
Vaccines against that form of strep are recommended for infants and older
people, the two groups most likely to get the infection.
Germs resistant to just one of the antibiotics can still be killed by the
other, so the researchers project either a slow growth or a decline for these
bacteria.
But using a new statistical formula that takes into account how the bacteria
are transmitted, the researchers forecast rapid growth for strains of S.
pneumoniae that are resistant to both antibiotics, reaching 40.6 percent
by summer 2004. That's up from just 8.6 percent in 1996.
