What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), also known as spastic colon, is a malfunction of the bowel which presents as mild but persistent problems in the gut. There is a vicious cycle involved in suffering from IBS. Some people report experiencing depression and anxiety, both of which can intensify symptoms. Conversely, IBS symptoms can cause feelings of depression and anxiety in people. There is as yet no specific cause for IBS; suffers may simply be more sensitive to stimuli that don't affect others. Population at Risk for IBS?This condition occurs more frequently in women than men. Some people who have it report relatives who suffer from it as well. It can be difficult to diagnose as there is no test that reveals it's presence. Doctors rely on medical histories and ruling out things that have similar symptoms but can be tested for.
