The 33 year-old law that is supposed to protect Americans from exposure to toxic chemicals is so outdated that China legally exports toxic materials into the U.S. that are not only banned in Japan and Europe, but can't even be used domestically in China. Astoundingly, of the 82,000 chemicals available for use in the U.S., only about 200 have been required to be tested for safety. [ read more ]

Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) introduced the HR 2218, the Parental Consent Act (PCA) on April 30, 2009. This bill will prohibit the use of Federal Funds for compulsory mental screening of children in schools and elsewhere. These screening tools such as "Teen Screen" have no scientific validity, use misleading and inappropriate questioning methods and are designed to lead to "diagnoses" which then mandate "treatment" with dangerous psychotropic medications of children and adolescents. While the Obama Administration has certainly made several positive inroads during the first 100 days of office, from appointing organic champion Kathleen Merrigan to Undersecretary of Agriculture and planting organic gardens at both the White House and USDA headquarters, the Administration has chosen to champion genetically engineered crops at home and abroad. President Obama announced on March 14th, 2009, the creation of a White House Food Safety Working Group to improve and coordinate the government's approach to the nationwide food safety crisis. Agri-Pulse reported that former Monsanto lobbyist Michael Taylor, who has been serving on President Obama's Department of Agriculture Transition Team, was "the leading candidate to staff the White House [food safety] working group." We have just weeks to stop the take over of family farms and ranches, organic and natural foods. The new administration is pushing new farm controls through Congress as fast as possible and have coordinated the bills so there will be no debate and the committee meetings are closed. [ read more ]
