"Overdo$ed America" by John Abramson, M.D., is eye-opening reading for anyone who wants to know more of the truth about the multiple scams being perpetrated against gullible consumers by the pharmaceutical industry in 2004. If you're like me and feel sick to your stomach every time a slick, expensive drug commercial shows up on your TV screen as you're trying to watch the news, you long ago sensed that Big Pharm was making Big Bucks with their Big Promos.

Well, your suspicions will be confirmed long before you finish reading Abramson's detailed, well-researched, and carefully documented indictment of the pharmaceutical companies that sell over $200 billion a year worth of drugs in America.

And many of those best-selling, highly-advertised drugs are of questionable value. If you're taking osteoporosis or cholesterol-lowering prescription medications, for example, you're in for a shock.

Did you know that five of the fourteen experts who participated in writing the new cholesterol guidelines, including the chair of the panel, disclosed financial relationships with manufacturers of statin drugs? Four of these five experts, according to Abramson, including the chair of the panel, had relationships with all three manufacturers of the best-selling statins.

Long-term readers of this newsletter know I would eat a bicycle seat before I'd put a prescription drug in my body, but my anti-drug point of view has never been a popular one.

It's a shame, but most people never challenge the idea that disease can be "cured" by drugs and instead spend tremendous amounts of money over their life times on compounds that may well cause as much harm as good.

After reading "Overdo$ed America," people who think for themselves will be a lot less likely to fall for current or future drug scams that are destroying the credibility of American medicine.
