Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Health

Postby James on Sat Jun 26, 2004 1:10 pm

I take omega-3 fatty acids. I take one with antioxidants in them (vitamin E and CoQ10). I have read a lot about all three being very good for my heart and overall health.

Go to google and search "benefits of omega-3" and you will find a lot of great health information on them.

Another place to get Omega-3 is from organic, unrefined coconut oil. I recommend taking at least 2 tablespoons daily. Coconut oil is als good for anti-aging. Some people report great results from using it as a facial moisturizer. Garden of Life makes a great coconut oil and so does Tropical Traditions. Also, Hemp Seed Oil is another good oil to use for Omega-3.

Another source is fish oil, but because of all the mercury content it can be difficult to find a good source. Right now, I believe that Carlson's probably makes the most unadulterated brand.

While it's ok to have added ingredients to supplements, I have found that it is sometimes better to take just the supplement that you need by itself. If you need Vitamin E then take Vitamin E (by the way make sure that you take one that has all the tocopherols and tocotrienols included). I believe that GHC offers a very good Vitamin E. Some supplements do require another supplement to help with absorption.

Hemp seed oil

Lori is right. Hemp seed oil is the best oil available. Make sure it is unrefined and green in color. Also make sure it is fresh. Hemp seed oil has a shelf life of about 6 months. Hemp seed oil is the closest oil to the sebum, or the oil the skin produces. It is also a great source of protein.

Vegan sources of omega-3s

Postby James on Mon Jul 05, 2004 6:22 am

The problem with plant sources of omega-3s is that they produce DHA and/or ALA and very little, if any, EPA. Now if you are a vegan, then there are many good sources of omega-3s like hemp, walnuts, India Moung(sp?) beans, etc.

IMO it is amazing how much good omega-3s can do. If you look at the literature, it is almost as if omega-3s qualifies as a snake oil! The good thing is, snake oil has never had this much science/clinical studies backing it up ;)

PS-I have also foudnda lot of good information on the following site:
http://www.softecare.com/Ingredients/om ... _facts.cfm
It is a commercial site, but they have compiled omega-3 information in a nice package with scinetific references.

Greetings,

This is actually my first post, there is such a wealth of information on this board. This thread regarding Omega 3 caught my attention and new I had to post.

I have a parent with heart problems and I set out on a quest to learn how to help him. It did not take me long to find all the buzz about Omega 3. We've gone the fish oil and other routes but getting him to actually consume them was another battle :D Then I was introduced to a brand new juice supplement, Sibu Balance. You may or may not have heard of it... Sibu Balance is made from the Seabuckthorn berry and this remarkable supplement has a 1:1 ration of Omega 3. Which means for every 1 ounce you consume you receive 1 gram of Omega 3. I have since become a Seabuckthorn research junkie and have been floored by the properties of this tiny fruit.

Olympian Labs Omega 3 Fish Oils are obtained from fish found in cold, deep water. These fish provide more of the Omega 3 factors than other fish. These essential fatty acids have an effect on a variety of disorders including the treatment and prevention of coronary artery disease and lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Because essential fatty acids are found in high concentrations in the brain, they are essential for nerve conduction and brain function. A deficiency in the essential fatty acids may impair learning ability and memory.
