How To get Back In Shape?

Postby sblilblue on Thu Mar 30, 2006 1:59 pm

Hello, I'm a 20 year old male college student. I played sports in high school, but sadly have become very lazy the past 2 years in college with school and work. I have realized that I'm out of breathe just running down the drive way and back to get the mail. This isn't good, considering I'm ONLY 20 years old. I was wondering some tips on how I could get back in shape that isn't very time consuming? I've started running for 30 mins every other day, but am wondering any other ideas that i could do maybe in the morning when i wake up, before i goto bed, ect. Any help is appreciated, Thank you.

There are several things that you can do to get back into shape. A good rule of thumb is to find activities that you enjoy so that you continue to do them and to benefit from them. It is great to see that you are willing to exercise and that you have started already. Also, we always recommend that anyone beginning any type of exercise program should consult with their physician first. One of the best exercises available is rebounding on a mini-trampoline. This exercises the major muscle groups of the body as well as providing many other health benefits. It is also something that can be done at any time of the day and doesn’t require that you leave the house. Other exercises include, stationary bike riding, jumping rope, swimming (if you have access to a pool), Yoga, or Pilates. Since you are a student, you may also be able to take a P.E. class at school and get credit for exercising. Consider walking or riding a bike to school or work whenever possible to sneak in some extra exercise.

Please keep in mind that there are other factors that contribute to your physical fitness. Diet is of key importance; Try to increase your intake of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables and decrease your intake of processed sugar and processed foods in general. Stay hydrated; try to drink at least ½ your body weight in purified or distilled water daily. Sleep is also of vital importance in restoring the body and regulating the metabolic functions. Breathe; try deep breathing exercises 2-3 times a day. Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 16 seconds, and then exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat this 10 times. This exercise can help to oxygenate the blood and increase your aerobic capacity. In addition, if you eat large amounts of processed food and/or do not go to the bathroom at least 1-2 times per day, a colon cleanse with an oxygen-based colon cleanser such as Oxy-Powder may also appropriate.
