One of the best ways to deal with any disease is to acknowledge that it is an issue that you need to address in your life but also realize that you do have some measure of control over your own health. I know that this is very difficult, especially with a condition such as Crohn’s disease and especially because of your young age. Keep in mind that sinking into depression will not help you find strategies to deal with the problem, but it can negatively affect the healing potential of your body. You are fortunate that you are aware of the problem before it has become too severe.
Aside from the medications, there are a number of supplements and nutritional considerations that may help. With any type of nutritional measures, I would allow for at least a month to evaluate how the products work for you. Some suggestions are as follows:
• Latero Flora 4-6 capsules daily – spread out throughout the day. This is a supplement that provides good bacterial to help bowel function.
• Oxy-Powder: work up to a tolerable dose. This is for a colon cleanse. This can be very important since many people with Crohn’s can suffer from bowel blockage due to scar tissue and inflammation. I would suggest starting at 1-2 capsules at first to make sure that you tolerate it well. Also, this should be taken at least 6 hours away from any medication to prevent any possible interaction.
• Oregano Oil: 5 drops 2x daily with meals
• Eliminate all dairy products; these can be irritating and pro-inflammatory for many people that suffer with Crohn’s.
• Zymitol Enzyme: 3 capsules 3x daily between meals. These are systemic enzymes that can help to maintain normal inflammation levels in the body, a very important consideration.
• Chiropractic Adjustment
• Intramax: 1 ounce daily for starters. This is an excellent liquid vitamin/mineral supplement. Supplementation can be particularly important because inflammation in the small intestine can decrease the absorption of nutrients. This should be taken on an empty stomach.
• If they are well-tolerated, the herbs Turmeric and Stinging Nettle may act as natural anti-inflammatory options.
I would strongly suggest consulting with a chiropractor or naturopath that is experienced with Crohn’s disease. He or she can provide additional nutritional counseling and monitor your progress while avoiding unnecessary use of drugs.
