Chiropractic Care for Bedwetting

Nocturnal Enuresis - wetting the bed at night. This can be a very embarrassing problem, often without explanation and affecting children that are otherwise well developed.

The ability of Chiropractic care to effectively reduce the number of "wet nights," through the treatment of those who suffer from enuresis, has been questioned both inside and outside the profession. Several journal articles have been written on both sides of the debate. One study of 171 children who wet the bed concluded that Chiropractic care is not as effective as other types of therapy for this condition. Still other reports claim success through specific spinal manipulation. Who is right?

A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reports "treatments for enuresis are numerous, varied and meet with mixed success." This study followed 46 subjects, 31 in the treatment group, and 15 in a control group. They considered 50 percent or more reduction in the frequency of bed wetting night to be a success.

There 41 males and 5 females, ranging in age from 5 to 13 years in age.

In terms of percentage, the treatment group had a 17.9 percent reduction in the number of wet nights, while the control group actually increased wet nights. The reduction of 17.9 percent is not a significant reduction according to the authors. They report in their conclusion however that the results suggest a trend towards the effectiveness of Chiropractic treatment, as 25 percent of the treatment subjects experienced a 50 percent or greater reduction of wet nights under chiropractic care. ,None of the children in the control group experience such a reduction in wet nights. The authors also state, "a larger study with a 6-month follow-up is therefore warranted."

One thing is for sure, if your child were one of those 50 percent reduced wet nights, you would probably be very happy.

Chiropractic care is generally very safe and effective. If your child suffers from bed wetting, and you haven't found an answer to the problem, see your family doctor of Chiropractic. All you may have to lose are some wet sheets.
