Chest discomfort... stress related?

Postby dolgoruky on Tue Feb 07, 2006 10:01 am

I'm a man of 37 years of age and other than flu I've never had any illnesses to speak of. I don't smoke or drink and up until 6 months ago took regular exercise. I still walk a lot but I do less sports than previously.

About 12 months ago I started experiencing some mild chest discomfort and dizziness. I thought it was indigestion because of the sedentary job I did. At one point it got quite bad and, to be honest, frightened me a bit so I went to the hospital, they did a blood test and ECG and told me there was nothing wrong with me other than perhaps a reflux problem.

After this I felt a lot better and the symptoms seemed to go away. But now they're back. What strikes me is the fact that now, and when I previously experienced the chest discomfort, were times when I was quite stressed out over various things.

My question is, could the cause of this problem be psychological? My son was born a year and a half ago and we've had quite a turbulent time since then with bereavements and relocating to a different country, etc.

Just an extra point: I occasionally experience a tingling in my left arm which predates the chest discomfort. I broke my arm ten years ago and was told by the doctor that I may have this problem from time to time.

Thanks for any advice.

There is definite possibility that the symptoms that you are experiencing are related to stress and anxiety, especially given the major life changes that you have undergone recently. I am very glad that you had a blood test and ECG performed in order to rule out a heart attack or like condition.

It sounds as if emotional triggers may be causing anxiety and also as if there may be a musculoskeletal component stemming from the broken arm; in particular the upper thoracic area can affect the heart and coronary arteries as well as the nerves to the hands, wrist, and fingers. I would suggest evaluation by an experienced chiropractor or naturopath to check on any involvement of the spine or shoulder as well as the possibility of some nutritional therapy including herbs and supplements.

An experienced practitioner should be able to discuss some stress reducing techniques including exercise, biofeedback, meditation, counseling, and others. It would also be a wise idea if they run some tests to evaluate the likelihood of cardiovascular disease or some related condition using a QXCI machine. Please remember that before starting any supplement program that it is wise to perform a colon cleanse, parasite and liver/gallbladder flush in order to increase the absorption of any nutrients that you may take. Thanks!
