best vitamin B12 for vegans?

Postby Granola Revolution on Fri Aug 18, 2006 10:53 am

hello, i am vegan and i have taken a vitamin B12 supplement ever since i started my veganism. it is methylcobalamin by Natural Factors, 1000mcg.

i am female 20 y/o, 5'1" height, 113 lbs. weight and vegan. this sublingual tablet can be broken in half. what do you think a proper dosage would be?, since i've been taking it since i started my veganism so i believe that i am not deficient. i also realized that this is a lactose base after i bought it so i was looking for a replacement.

that is the first question. a second question is this: i bought another supplement from Trophic, i canadian brand, without lactose, since i am running out. it is also methylcobalamin 1000mcg but its base is sucralose. sucralose is Splenda for as far as i can remember, a chemical sweetener. this is not appealing to me. i was wondering if lactose is healthier than sucralose and if i should just take the Natural Factors one even though it is not vegan.

a third question is: what is the difference between cyanoconalamin and methylcobalamin? i read that the body must combine cyanocobalamin into methylcobalamin before it can be absorbed. can i get more information on this?

thank you for all your help!

Let us address each of these questions in turn:
1. Unique B-12 is a vegetarian tablet and uses grape sugar instead of the more common lactose base, /www.ghchealth.com/methylcobalamin-sublingual-b12.php.
2. You are correct; a little lactose is probably better than the artificial sweetener.
3. The body can absorb cyanocobalamin, but, apparently, the conversion into methylcobalamin in the liver is not very efficient. Methylcobalamin is a much more active form of B-12, especially when it comes to the health of the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system.

Most tablets come in a 1000 mcg dosage, 1 mg, which is a good general supplemental dose for people that are not deficient.
