As a seventh grade student, Claire Nelson learned that di(ethylhexyl)adepate(DEHA),
considered a carcinogen, is found in plastic wrap. She also learned that
the FDA had never studied the effect of microwave cooking on plastic-wrapped
food. Claire began to wonder: "Can cancer-causing particles seep into
food covered with household plastic wrap while it is being microwaved?"
Three years later, with encouragement from her high school science teacher,
Claire set out to test what the FDA had not. Although she had an idea for
studying the effect of microwave radiation on plastic-wrapped food, she did
not have the equipment. Eventually, Jon Wilkes at the National Center for
Toxicological Research in Jefferson, Arkansas, agreed to help her. The
research center, which is affiliated with the FDA, let her use its facilities
to perform her experiments, which involved microwaving plastic wrap in virgin
olive oil.
Claire tested four different plastic wraps and "found not just the carcinogens
but also xenoestrogen was migrating [into the oil]...."Xenoestrogens
are linked to low sperm counts in men and to breast cancer in women.
Throughout her junior and senior years, Claire made a couple of trips each
week to the research center, which was 25 miles from her home, to work on
her experiment. An article in Options reported that "her analysis found
that DEHA was migrating into
the oil at between 200 parts and 500 parts per million.
The FDA standard is 0.05 parts per billion." Her summarized results
have been published in science journals. Claire Nelson received the American
Chemical Society's top science prize for students during her junior year
and fourth place at the International
Science and Engineering Fair (Fort Worth, Texas) as a senior. "Carcinogens

On Channel 2 (Huntsville, AL) this morning they had a Dr. Edward Fujimoto
from Castle Hospital on the program. He is the manager of the Wellness Program
at the hospital. He was talking about dioxins and how bad they are for us.
He said that we should not
be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This applies
to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high
heat and plastics releases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the
cells of the body. Dioxins are carcinogens and
highly toxic to the cells of our bodies. Instead, he recommends using glass,
Corning Ware, or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results
without the dioxins. So such things as TV dinners, instant saimin and soups,
etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else.
Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. Just safer to use
tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He said we might remember when some
of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper.
The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
To add to this: Saran wrap placed over foods as they are nuked, with the
high heat, actually drips poisonous toxins into the food. Use paper towels
instead.
COMMENT: We recommend that you throw out your microwave. It radiates
your food. Simply put, because microwaved food is chemically and molecularly altered,
its nutrients are lost and harmful compounds
are created. The body, exposed to foreign
and dangerous substances and further deprived
of the nutrients it needs, becomes sick.
Cancer is especially high in those eating
microwaved food. "A statistically higher
percentage of cancerous growths result in
[the stomach and intestines]," Kopp
writes, "plus a generalized breakdown
of the peripheral cellular tissues and a
gradual degeneration of digestive and excretory
functions." [Kopp, William. "Microwave
Madness: The Effects of Microwave Apparatus
on Food and Humans" in Perceptions,

Scientists
reveal the secret of cuddles
19:00 28 July 02
Gaia
Vince
Scientists
have discovered why being cuddled feels so
good - human skin has a special network of
nerves that stimulate a pleasurable response
to stroking.
The
revelation came after doctors realized that
a woman with no sense of touch still felt
a "pleasant" sensation when her
skin was caressed.
Normal
touch is transmitted to the brain through
a network of fast-conducting nerves, called
myelinated fibres, which carry signals at
60 metres per second. But there is a second
slow-conducting nerve network of unmyelinated
fibres, called C-tactile (CT), the role of
which was unknown. The CT network carries
signals at just one metre per second.
"It
must be used for unconscious aspects of touch
because it is so slow," says Håkan Olausson,
who led the study at the Department of Clinical
Neurophysiology at Sahlgrenska University
Hospital, Sweden. "It seems the CT network
conveys emotions, or a sense of self."
"This
study definitely helps our understanding of
how touch systems work," says Brian Fiske,
assistant editor at Nature Neuroscience. "The
researchers were very fortunate to have found
a patient who had lost the main touch receptors
but still had the slow CT fibres."
Below
the nose
Scientists
have known for some time that myelinated nerve
fibres transmit information about touch, such
as its strength and position. But the function
of CT fibres was a mystery. This was because
it is impossible to distinguish the CT fibre
signals from those of the continuously activated
fast myelinated fibre.
The
patient examined by the Swedish researchers
had a disorder that left her with no myelinated
touch fibres in her body below the level of
her nose. But her CT fibres remained intact.
Olausson
stroked the patient's arm and hand with a
paintbrush. Although she could not feel touch,
tickle or vibration, the patient said she
experienced a "pleasant" pressure
when her arm was caressed with a paintbrush.
MRI
scans of her brain revealed that the stroking
activated insular region of the cerebral cortex
associated with emotional response.
Hairy
skin
The
researchers concluded that the CT system may
be of important for emotional, hormonal and
behavioural responses to tactile stimulation.
"They
are the opposite to pain fibres and give the
message that the touch is non- harmful," Olausson
told New Scientist. "Stimulation of CT
fibres is probably linked to the release of
pleasure hormones, like oxytocin. Studies
have shown that if you stroke infants, their
levels of oxytocin increase."
Further
research by the Swedish team suggests that
CT fibres are only present in hairy skin -
the patient showed no response to the palm
of her hand being stroked.
Olausson
speculates that because the hand is used for
so many critical tasks, it needs to be very
sensitive to touch and therefore has a greater
density of faster- conducting nerves.

Watermelon may help fight
cancer
Summer
fruit a major source of antioxidants
By
Karen Collins, R.D.
MSNBC
CONTRIBUTOR
Aug.
19 — New government research shows that tomatoes should
not be considered our only major source of
lycopene, the phytochemical (natural plant
substance) that could help prevent certain
cancers and other health problems. Watermelon
may be just as good a source.
LYCOPENE
is the substance that gives tomatoes, watermelon,
guava, and red and pink grapefruit their characteristic
color. Besides adding color, lycopene seems
to be a powerful antioxidant. It neutralizes
highly unstable molecules that would otherwise
react with and damage our cells.
In
a large Harvard University study, the risk
of prostate cancer was a third lower in men
who ate the most tomato products compared
to men who ate the least, and many researchers
believe lycopene was the reason. Later studies
also linked greater consumption of foods high
in lycopene with a lower risk of prostate
and other cancers.
According
to a new report published in Agricultural
Research, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s
Agricultural Research Service (ARS) tested
13 varieties of watermelon for lycopene content
and found that watermelon contains more than
tomatoes do. The amount of lycopene varied
among varieties (red seedless have most) as
well as growing conditions.
Of course, processed tomato products like sauce and juice contain a large
concentration of tomatoes in a small portion, so a standard serving of
these products contains more lycopene than in a typical one-cup serving
of watermelon.
Past research with lycopene from tomatoes has shown that this
phytochemical is not absorbed equally well
from all foods that contain it. Studies show
that the lycopene in tomato products that
have been heat-processed (like tomato juice
and sauce) is better absorbed than that in
raw tomatoes. Yet in comparisons made after
three weeks of
consuming
equal amounts of lycopene from heat-processed
tomato juice and unprocessed watermelon juice,
ARS research found similar blood levels of
the antioxidant. Researchers next plan to
evaluate whether lycopene from watermelon
is, like that from tomatoes, better absorbed
when consumed in a meal containing some fat.
WEIGHT CONTROL BONUS
Even without these new findings about lycopene, watermelon
has always been an excellent choice for snacks,
desserts and salads. Each cup (about half
a large slice) offers about 14 milligrams
of vitamin C (16 to 19 percent of recommended
daily intake). Watermelon also offers a weight-control
bonus. A one-cup serving can satisfy a sweet
tooth with just 49 calories, making it one
of the fruits least concentrated in sugar
and calories.
Nevertheless, we need to remember that lycopene is still just
one small element in the overall picture of
how eating substantial amounts of fruits and
vegetables helps protect our health. The American
Institute for Cancer Research estimates that
meeting the recommendation of at least five
servings of fruits and vegetables daily could
reduce cancer incidence by as much as 20 percent.
By eating a wide variety of produce, we can
ensure that we will also get a wide range
of the phytochemicals unique to certain types
of fruits and vegetables.
Dark leafy greens, berries, citrus fruit, and different types
or families of vegetables all offer their
own particular phytochemicals. If we go beyond
improving the balance of fruits and vegetables
in our diets to meet other AICR recommendations
as well, like limiting saturated fat and alcohol,
maintaining a healthy weight and staying physically
active, our cancer incidence could drop 30
to 40 percent.

No
Safe Level of Trans Fat
Pastry
and fried food lovers beware: there is no
level of trans fatty acids that is safe to
consume, a report from the Institute of Medicine
concluded.
The
report is likely to lead the US Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) to go ahead with stalled
plans to order manufacturers to disclose the
trans fatty acid content of foods on packaging.
An
expert panel at the Institute of Medicine
issued a detailed review of research into
trans fatty acids, the class of fat found
in abundance in stick margarine, hydrogenated
vegetable shortening and foods that contain
them.
Though
the panel had the option to declare a safe
upper limit of daily trans fatty acid consumption,
it declined to do so. "It is recommended
that trans fatty acid consumption be as low
as possible while consuming a nutritionally
adequate diet.
Trans
fatty acids are known to increase blood levels
of low density lipoprotein (LDL), so-called "bad" cholesterol,
while lowering levels of high density lipoprotein
(HDL), known as "good" cholesterol.
A blood profile containing high LDL and low
HDL is a strong risk factor for heart disease.
Trans
fatty acids are common in foods containing
shortening, including pastries and fried foods,
and are found in lower levels in dairy products
and meats.
FDA
proposed ordering the labeling of trans fatty
acid levels on food packages in 1999 but held
off finalizing the regulation until the Institute
of Medicine issued its report. The agency
is likely to go ahead with a rule ordering
the labeling, according to press reports.
In
1994, the Center for Science in the Public
Interest (CSPI) petitioned the FDA to require
that Nutrition Facts labels disclose trans
fat. In 1999, the Food and Drug Administration
proposed to require trans fat labeling, but
delayed finalizing a regulation, in part,
to consider a report from the National Academy
of Science's Institute of Medicine, which
was just released.

Humming
Appears to Increase Sinus Ventilation
Humming is an extremely effective
way of increasing ventilation in the sinuses,
according to Swedish scientists.
As
a result of their finding, the researchers
hope to study whether daily episodes of humming
can reduce the risk of sinusitis in patients
susceptible to upper respiratory infection
(URI).
(Sinusitis,
a common illness reported by 14 percent of
the U.S. population, involves the inflammation
of one of the paranasal sinuses, usually from
URI.)
The
researchers, who tested 10 healthy males,
ages 34 to 38, found that humming sped up
the exchange of air between the sinuses and
the nasal cavity and increased the nitric
oxide (NO) rate by 15-fold.
The
researchers pointed out that proper ventilation
is essential for the maintenance of sinus
integrity, and that blockage of the opening
between the two cavities is a central event
in the development of sinusitis.
From
further larger-scale studies, they hope to
show that their NO technique can offer an
easy, non-invasive way of identifying persons
who are at risk of developing sinusitis.
The
authors note that the current test to measure
the degree the sinuses are open is invasive
and somewhat cumbersome to perform.
The
study appears in the second issue for July
of the American Thoracic Society's peer-reviewed
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical
Care Medicine. July 26, 2002

British
study finds GE bacteria lives on in human
gut
Significant
concerns over human health were raised in
July with the discovery that genetically modified
DNA material from crops is finding its way
into human gut bacteria.
Researchers
at the University of Newcastle in northern
England -- in a report commissioned by Britain's
Food Standards Agency --conducted a study
and said that an herbicide-resistant gene
from GM soy was found in three of seven test
patients.
This
development is highly significant because
it provides evidence that what the biotech
industry has been saying about this issue
is wrong. Industry officials have stated repeatedly
that DNA from genetically altered food cannot
transfer to human gut bacteria.
The
new British study found that genetically engineered
DNA does indeed transfer into bacteria in
the human digestive system. As a result, the
effectiveness of medicinal antibiotics may
be reduced. Bacteria in the human body may
develop immunity to the antibiotics serving
as marker genes in the biotech crops.
The
discovery is of even more significance when
considering that all genetically engineered
crops currently being commercially grown do
contain these antibiotic marker genes.
If
the biotech industry was wrong about the issue
of genetically engineered DNA transferring
to bacteria in the human gut, what other safety
assurances that the biotech industry is offering
us will turn out to be wrong?
In
the study, researchers gave seven volunteers,
who earlier had had their lower intestines
removed, a meal consisting of a burger and
milkshake that contained genetically altered
soy. Researchers took samples of intestinal
bacteria, and discovered herbicide-resistant
genes from the GM soy in three of the volunteers.
Researchers
fed the same meal to a control group of 12
people whose stomachs are intact. No GM material
was discovered in their feces.
Michael
Antonio, a senior lecturer in molecular genetics
at King's College Medical School in London,
told the British paper the Guardian that
the findings are significant. "To my
knowledge they have demonstrated clearly that
you can get GM plant DNA in the gut bacteria.
Everyone used to deny that this was possible."
The
truth is that genetically engineered foods
represent a giant experiment that treats humans
and the environment as guinea pigs. Many of
us would prefer to not be a part of this experiment.
But without labeling we are not able to choose
to not participate. So we continue to fight
for the right to know what they are doing
to our food.

CDC
says West Nile virus here for good
By KRISTEN WYATT, Associated Press
ATLANTA (August 6, 2002 2:18 p.m. EDT) - National health officials warned
Monday that the West Nile virus is here
to stay and that simple prevention efforts,
such as wearing insect repellant, are the
best way to manage the epidemic.
CDC director Dr. Julie Gerberding told reporters that she
wasn't surprised human infections have risen
since the disease spread south and west from
New York, where it was first seen in 1999.
The disease has been found in 88 people this
year.
Gerberding insisted there is little chance of eliminating
the mosquito-borne disease, especially when
it spreads to areas with longer summers and
warmer water.
Instead, she said, officials should spray for mosquitoes as
much as possible and people should eliminate
standing water from their lawns to reduce
their risk. Wearing insect repellent and long
pants and shirts are also recommended.
"I don't think we want to overstate the situation," she
said in a media briefing. "It's been
an evolving problem, so therefore there is
a certain sense of urgency. But I don't think
we need to send the message there's a crisis."
Four people in Louisiana have died this summer of West Nile,
a virus that can cause flu-like symptoms and
sometimes potentially fatal swelling of the
brain. Most of the victims have been older
people or those with weak immune systems.
The virus has been detected in 34 states and Washington. Health
officials expect it will continue spreading
west.
Dr. Jim Hughes, director of the CDC's National Center for
Infectious Disease, said West Nile is showing
up earlier in the summer as it moves to warmer
climates.
"The disease will not necessarily behave the same in
all geographic areas," he said.
Gerberding also said people shouldn't worry that pesticides
being used to kill mosquitoes pose a health
threat.
"There are very, very few if any health consequences," she
said. "Basically they're safe, and the
risks they present are outweighed by the benefits
of reducing the mosquito population."
COMMENT: Here in the Houston area, when someone in a particular area contracts
the West Nile Virus, the city of Houston
is putting up fluorescent green posters
stating that someone in this area has contracted
the disease AND that everyone should be
sure and use an insect repellant that contains
DEET. According to the paragraphs above
we shouldn’t worry needlessly about these
pesticides as the risks are outweighed by
the benefits (this is rapidly becoming the
motto of the FDA and the CDC). DEET is
a known carcinogenic and can be stored in
the body…you decide…should you be concerned
or not?
All Natural Mosquito Spray
Below
is a good "natural" mixture to repel
mosquitoes. Please use good quality
essential oils. When using essential
oils be sure and get a good carrier oil (cold-pressed,
raw and organic)...almond is a good one to
use.
Thyme 4
drops
Lemongrass 8 drops
Lavender 4 drops
Peppermint 4 drops
Dilute 2 drops in 2 teaspoons of oil for a body rub or simply add the neat
essential to any lotion or cream you may have. You can make a water-based
splash by adding 5 drops of the blend above to 1 tablespoon of witch hazel
and then diluting it in 4 tablespoons of distilled water. Shake the
ingredients together well in their container before putting onto your body.
Keep this mixture in a dark, glass spray bottle.

A
Code of Ethical Behavior For Patients
(A
tongue-in-check view of the doctor-patient
relationship copied from an Internet discussion
list)
1. DO
NOT EXPECT YOUR DOCTOR TO SHARE YOUR DISCOMFORT. Involvement
with the patient’s suffering might cause him
to lose valuable scientific objectivity.
2. BE
CHEERFUL AT ALL TIMES. Your doctor leads
a busy and trying life and requires all the
gentleness and reassurance he can get.
3. TRY
TO SUFFER FROM THE DISEASE FOR WHICH YOU ARE
BEING TREATED. Remember that your doctor
has a professional reputation to uphold.
4. DO
NOT COMPLAIN IF THE TREATMENT FAILS TO BRING
RELIEF. You must believe your doctor has
achieved a deep insight into the true nature
of your illness, which transcends any mere
permanent disability you may have experienced.
5. NEVER
ASK YOUR DOCTOR TO EXPLAIN WHAT HE IS DOING
OR WHY HE IS DOING IT. It is presumptuous
to assume such profound matters could be explained
in terms you would understand.
6. SUBMIT
TO NOVEL EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT READILY. Though
the surgery may not benefit you directly,
the resulting research paper will surely be
of widespread interest.
7. PAY
YOUR MEDICAL BILLS PROMPTLY AND WILLINGLY. You
should consider it a privilege to contribute,
however modestly, to the well-being of physicians
and other humanitarians.
8. DO
NOT SUFFER FROM AILMENTS YOU CANNOT AFFORD. It
is sheer arrogance to contract an illness
that is beyond your means.
9. NEVER
REVEAL ANY OF THE SHORTCOMINGS THAT HAVE COME
TO LIGHT IN THE COURSE OF TREATMENT BY YOUR
DOCTOR. The patient-doctor relationship is
a privileged one, and you have a sacred duty
to protect him from exposure.
10. NEVER
DIE WHILE IN YOUR DOCTOR’S PRESENCE OR UNDER
HIS DIRECT CARE. This will only cause him
needless inconvenience and embarrassment.
